INS Viraat was originally commissioned in the Royal Navy as HMS Hermes on 18 November 1959 and she served as the flagship of the Royal Navy's taskforce in the 1982 Falklands War.
INS Viraat completed another life-extension refit beginning in July 1999 and ending in April 2001, which is expected to extend her serviceability till 2010.
The INS Viraat (R22) is a Centaur-class aircraft carrier currently in service with the Indian Navy.

The INS Vikrant (formerly the HMS Hercules (R49)) was a Majestic-class light aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy.
Despite a crack in a boiler, she saw real combat against Pakistan in the 1971 Liberation War of Bangladesh.
She was considered important enough by the Pakistan Navy that they sent the submarine Ghazi all the way to the Bay of Bengal to mine the Visakhapatnam harbor in an unsuccessful attempt to sink the Vikrant; the Ghazi itself falling prey to INS Rajput.

The standard displacement of INS Viraat is 28, 500 tons and she is propelled by steam turbines with 76,000 shaft horsepower.
At present, the INS Viraat carries a complement of Sea Harrier aircraft, which are wired for Sea Eagle Anti-Ship Missiles (ASMs) and Matra 550 Magic missiles and various choppers like the Sea King for Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), Search-And-Rescue (SAR) and transport.
As of 2005 it was reported that the INS Viraat would be retired in the next four years, before 2010.

INS Hosdurg, a "Nanuchka" class corvette, became the second decommissioned vessel to be sunk by a live Sea Eagle missile, launched from a Jaguar-IM of the IAF, in June 2000.
However, the runway at INS Garuda was too short to operate the Vampires and the squadron had to be based at the IAF base in Sulur, near Coimbatore, in the state of Tamil Nadu.
This was followed by the first deck landing on the carrier, INS Vikrant, on 20 Dec 1983 and the arrival of the first Sea Harrier T.Mk.60 trainer, on 29 March 1984.
