INS Amba (A54) is the only submarine tender ship in service with the Indian Navy.
The Amba was aquired in order to support the Indian Navy's then growing fleet of Foxtrot class submarines.
On May 26, 2001 a fire broke out in the laundry section of the Amba during a routine refit at the Cochin Shipyard, suffocating two washermen.

VISAKHAPATNAM: INS Amba (elephant), the Russian-built last naval ship that had extensively participated in the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war was decommissioned at a ceremony at the Eastern Naval Command base here by Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Command Vice-Admiral Sureesh Mehta.
With her intrinsic heavy duty repair bays, torpedo workshops, medical facilities and huge accommodation space, INS Amba enabled long deployments of submarines away from the base ports both in the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal.
Amba, with a displacement of 8016 tonnes, could cruise at a maximum speed of 17 knots and it has two tubes torpedoes and two 76.2 mm guns.

INS Anjadip, the last of the Petya class ships of the Indian Navy which rendered glorious service in safeguarding the vast maritime frontiers of the country for over three decades, was decommissioned at a solemn ceremony held at the Naval Base, Visakhapatnam in early 2004.
At the stroke of sunset, the colours which the ship had flown with pride through out her 31 years of service were brought down for the last time.
With the sounding of the last post, the Paying off Pennant was lowered and a box containing the ships’s naval ensign was handed over to FOC-in-C by the last Commanding Officer of INS Anjadip, Cdr Siddhartha Panda, marking the decommissioning of the naval ship.
