The design specification was agreed in 1957 and the first ship was laid down in 1962.
Twenty ships were built for the Soviet Navy, one ship (ORP Warszawa (271)) was transferred to Poland and five ships were built for the Indian Navy to a modified design as the Rajput Class destroyers.
