MUMBAI, March 5: The ninth `Kilo' class submarine, the INS Sindhurakshak, joined the Indian Navy's western fleet in Mumbai after a 70-day maiden voyage of over 8,000 nautical miles.
The new submarine is expected to give the Indian navy's underwater arm a quantum leap, since it has not received a new submarine in four years.Originally built for the Russian navy by shipbuilders Rubin, INS Sindhurakshak was bought by the Indian navy last year after the Russian navy failed to buy it.
Sindhurakshak is a `Kilo' class diesel electric attack submarine (SSK), of which the Indian navy already operates eight.

A P J Abdul Kalam Monday created history by becoming the country's first President to undertake an undersea journey in a submarine.
Kalam boarded the INS Sindhurakshak, a Russian-origin kilo class submarine, from the naval dockyard at around 11 am, a naval spokesman said in Visakhapatnam.
The INS Sindhurakshak would sail 20 nautical miles from the shore and would go 40 mt deep, he added.

The force inducted INS Beas, the third and the last of the completely indigenously-built Brahmaputra class guided missile frigates, in July, while commencing the cutting of steel for the Indigenous Aircraft Carrier -- the most ambitious shipbuilding project in the country upto now.

The new submarine INS Sindhurakshak commissioned into the Indian Navy last month in Russia further strengthens Indo-Russian defence cooperation.
The Sindhurakshak is an EKM 877-kilo class submarine built by the Russian Rubin Design Bureau and becomes the fifth of its kind in the Indian submarine fleet.
Thus the Sindhurakshak does not really strengthen the existing fleet but only amounts to a replacement for the older Foxtrot submarines being retired.

Dubbed as `Black Hole' by NATO for its noiseless operation in sea depths making it invisible to the enemy sonars, the vessel has been acquired by the Indian Navy from Russia under a $200 million deal signed in November 1997 for the purchase of two kilo-class submarines.

The Indian Scorpene deal has been in the press for agesa and has still not been approved by the Indian government, so lets not pretend its a done deal by any chance, right now Indias youngest subs are about 12 years old....
Well India did buy two new kilo class sub the first in 1997(INS Sindhurakshak) and the second in 2000(INS Sindhushastra), so your point of the youngest subs being 12 years old is plain rubbish.
So unless they want to change their approach there is no need for another sub.
