Topic: INTSINT

 Transcription systems
INTSINT aims therefore at the symbolization of pitch levels or prosodic target points, each characterising a point in the fundamental frequency curve.
The great majority of the systems described depend on the transcriptor's judgment, in the sense that the transcriber himself decides, after an auditory or acoustic analysis of the utterance, which is the symbol that more adequately reflects a given prosodic phenomenon.
For the purposes of a multilingual project, it is essential that the coding system should be able to convey prosodic contrasts in a number of languages, and it seems logical to use a system conceived with that purpose.

It should be noted that level 2), both in its IPO and INTSINT instances, has an inner structure corresponding to a typical three-step procedure in the phonetic annotation of intonation: obtain the raw f0 curve (element ), stylize it (elements and ) and label it (elements and ).
INTSINT is a coding system of intonation developed by Daniel Hirst and his colleagues at the CNRS centre of theAix-en-Provence University.
INTSINT includes three symbols to label the Absolute Tones, which are defined according to the speaker’s pitch range.

INTSINT assumes that pitch patterns can be adequately described using a limited set of tonal symbols, {T,M,B,H,S,L,U,D} (standing for : Top, Mid, Bottom, Higher, Same, Lower, Upstepped, Downstepped respectively) each one of which characterises a point on the fundamental frequency curve.
A distinction is made between non-iterative {H, S, L} and iterative {U, D} relative tones since in a number of descriptions it appears that iterative raising or lowering uses a smaller Fo interval than non-iterative raising or lowering.
Relative symbols are represented by coefficients of linear regression on the preceding target-point together with an associated standard deviation.

In this paper we present the INTSINT system for the transcription of intonation, comparing it to the ToBI system which in the last ten years has become an annotation standard for numerous studies of intonation.
The INTSINT approach, based on a reversible model of representation, displays four levels of analysis and representation.
The INTSINT approach, unlike ToBI, does not require a prior phonological analysis of intonation system of the language being studied.

INTSINT (INternational Transcription System for INTonation) is a parametric phoentic model for intonation patterns, proposed by Daniel Hirst.
It describes intonation with a limited set of abstract tonal symbols, which is designed such that the inventory of pitch patterns of a given language is not required.
The input to the INTSINT system is a series of target points, which is estimated by a low-level F0 modeling technique called MOMEL.

As far as we know, very few are the studies that have approached prosodic alterations in parkinsonian patients taking into consideration, at one and the same time, the three following levels of analysis: phonetic, phonological (intonation groups) and linguistic (functional levels).
The INTSINT approach has been applied to a number of languages and not just to normal speech but also pathological speech.
The aim here is to study the relevance of this alphabet for the prosody of the dysarthric speech.

The project presents a pilot study whose aim is to evaluate two prosodic transcription systems of speech, based on phonetic-acoustic analyses of Brazilian Portuguese (BP).
In this way, we intend to evaluate the boundaries of that system, the kind of knowledge of the Entonational Fonology of BP that it supposes and the consistency among transcriptors.
The second system, the INTSINT, will be evaluated from the results of the automatic transcription for the program provided and developed by Daniel Hirst, researcher of the Provence University.

Finally, some preliminary findings regarding the use of final rises in French were reported.
In two corpus studies, a significant link was found between final rises (expressed with the help of the INTSINT alphabet) and polar questions, as well as final rises and discourse topic openings.
While the association of rises with topic openings was stronger than the association with questions (suggesting the operation of the Effort Code), there appeared to be no noticeable tendency to use final rises with topic-opening questions.

Generally, comparison of original and modelled versions of the same utterances using INTSINT coding revealed fairly successful matching.
The three main types of mismatches that occurred were: stylistic changes, changes of prominence relations, and shifts of word accent.
