Country codes are short alphabetic or numeric geographical codes (geocodes) developed to represent countries and dependent areas, for use in data processing and communications.
The coding system for diplomatic license plates in the United States, assigned by the U.S. State Department.
Before the 2004 EU enlargement the EU used the UN Road Traffic Conventions license plate codes; since then, it uses ISO 3166-1, with 2 exceptions: EL (not GR) is used for Greece, and UK (not GB) is used for the United Kingdom.

ISO 3-alpha codes are not posted to the Internet by ISO; the codes shown are from the United Nations, Country and Region Codes for Statistical Use, which also provided the numerical codes.
IOC codes are from the IOC's National Olympic Committees pages.
Vehicle codes are from the Transport Division of the UN Economic Commission for Europe; I have omitted several vehicle codes which appear to be obsolete because they refer to previous names of the territory rather than the present name.

FIPS codes have not yet been assigned to these "countries", but the Factbook's naming scheme implies that they should be AX and DX, respectively.
Finally, FIPS allocates codes to the Paracel (PF) and Spratly (PG) Islands, two island groups in the South China Sea that are claimed by every country within shooting distance; ISO 3166 is noncommital about the Paracels and Spratlys.
However, some of the codes reported there are not the ones in actual use, because some countries are lax in reporting their codes to the U.N. Secretary General.
