The IOM Colombo “Voluntary Assisted Return and Sustainable Reintegration Programme (VARSRP)” offers return and reintegration assistance to voluntary Sri Lankan returnees from the EU, including the Nordic countries.
Through the VARSRP programme, IOM can also facilitate contact between persons still considering return from the host country and migrants who already returned voluntarily to Sri Lanka.
IOM Helsinki, together with UNHCR and ECRE, participates in the project as member of the Steering Committee

IOM’s mission in BiH was initiated in 1992 when an office was opened in the basement of Koševo Hospital in Sarajevo.
IOM also signed several agreements with the United States, Canada and Australia in order to resettle Bosnian nationals for whom the new situation (especially in ethnic and economic terms) made it diificult to stay, like mixed couples and single mothers.
IOM identified the need for not only providing return assistance, but the necessity to include measures to make the returns sustainable by contributing to the reconstruction of the economy and social services.

Based on its constitution, which entrusts IOM with "arranging for the organised transfer of and providing reception assistance for displaced persons", IOM is often called upon to assist in the resettlement of vast numbers of uprooted people in countries affected by war.
IOM does not limit its assistance to displaced persons to the time they are en route, but it engages in pre-departure and post-arrival assistance.
IOM also contributes to the prevention of new conflict and new population movements by stabilising and strengthening societies still vulnerable from the previous armed conflict.

The IOM does not evaluate whether an asylum seeker has had a full and fair asylum determination procedure, nor does it conduct systematic post-return monitoring of any migrants, which heightens the fear that people could be returned in the absence of any mechanism to determine if their continuing safety is assured.
IOM was tasked with conducting a fact-finding and information campaign; developing a standardized claim form; establishing a series of claim registration offices; and offering facilities where property disputes could be settled through voluntary mediation.

A major IOM effort was publication in 1998 of a volume entitled "Planetary Materials", an encyclopedic reference work on inner solar system materials, published by the Mineralogical Society of America, and edited by Papike.
Coupled with new SEM and electron microprobe instruments maintained and operated by the IOM, and new transmission electron microscopes in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, this consolidated the IOM's strength as a microbeam research institute in planetary materials.
The IOM looks forward to future sample return missions from Mars and other inner solar system bodies, and is poised to play an important role in the future exploration of our sister planets.
