  Learning the IPA for English
Learning the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) is not as difficult a task as it seems.
Most of the IPA symbols are familiar to you from English spelling; there are some new symbols to learn: 8 new consonant symbols, and 8 new vowel symbols.
When you transcribe words (that is, write words using the IPA symbols), you do not have the same freedom as in handwriting.

The Extended IPA was first published in 1990, and modified over the next few years before its official publication in the Journal of the International Phonetic Association in 1994 allowed it to be officially adopted by the ICPLA.
An IPA symbol is often distinguished from the sound it is intended to represent since there is not a one-to-one correspondence between symbol and sound in broad transcription.
For traditional diacritics, the IPA uses the name of the symbol from a certain language, for example, é is acute, based on the name of the symbol in English and French.

 An Introduction to IPA
IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) is a standard set of symbols used for notating pronunciation that was established by the International Phonetic Association to enable more universally and accurately understood communication regarding pronunciation.
IPA is used extensively by singers, speech pathologists, linguists, and others whose areas of expertise involve in-depth study of pronunciation.
Have a look at the full chart of the IPA to get an idea of how specific one can be when using IPA; however, my own experience with IPA, and that of most singers, consists primarily of writing symbols for vowels and consonants only.
