 IPENZ - Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand
have found the scholarship immensely helpful so the IPENZ Foundation encourages support from the Branches to help more students reach their potential.
In 2007 the IPENZ Foundation awarded scholarships to five students going on to tertiary education in engineering.
The Trustees were overwhelmed with the level of interest shown in the scholarships and were delighted to receive nearly 100 applications.

 Conan Fee elected Fellow of IPENZ
The honour was for his contribution to advancement of engineering knowledge and technological education - specifically recognising his research contribution in the area of bio-separations and his role in developing innovative teaching methods integrating design across the Waikato BE programme.
IPENZ says associate Professor Fee is a clear and innovative thinker who has tackled a variety of important industrial separations problems in his research.
Additionally, he has been a key player in the development of BE programmes at Waikato University, and his innovation in teaching methods has contributed to his students winning several national student awards for design and vacation work during the early days of the offering of the new qualification.

The original idea arose from discussions at a February 1996 N.Z. Geotechnical Society Conference in Hamilton on Geotechnical Issues in Land Development where several people mentioned a 1983/84 IPENZ publication on Engineering Risk and said that they had found it to be helpful in their professional practice.
CAE then approached both IPENZ and the Consulting Engineers Advancement Society (CEAS) who had supported the original publication, with the proposal of using it as a basis for a new updated publication on engineering risk.
Subsequently it was decided to substantially change the focus of the publication from that of the original 1983/84 IPENZ document, towards a more structured text on the management of engineering risk.

In announcing the fellowship, IPENZ noted that through his reputation as an accomplished researcher Professor David had attracted considerable research funding.
IPENZ said that as well as demonstrating research excellence, Professor David was “an academic who truly professes his discipline through wider collegial engagement”.

In New Zealand IPENZ is the registration authority which assesses and registers Chartered Professional Engineers (CPEng) who meet the relevant standards of competence under the Chartered Professional Engineers of New Zealand Act (2002).

Graduates, supported by their mentors, are encouraged to recognise gaps in their competency development, and reflect on their performance; and they are given every opportunity to acquire the competencies expected of engineering professionals, using the IPENZ quality marks as an external benchmark.
Learning organisations are obviously only one part of a complex equation of retaining good staff, but a strong graduate training and mentoring ethos can make the difference to the company as a whole and should be encouraged.

 Technology Education New Zealand: Membership
In February of this year, TENZ moved from its administrative base from The Royal Society of New Zealand (RSNZ) to IPENZ – Engineers New Zealand, where it is defined as a Technical Interest Group.
The move requires the construction of a new TENZ database, which can be operated and administered by IPENZ as part of their national database.

Its been a long hard road to get this far and there is still a fair way to go before we have a nationally recognised register of competent fire engineers available to those in need of design and review services.
Sociology teaches that when professionals are involved in national or international bodies addressing and defining the nature of their tasks, there can be some conflict between the professional expertise required and the bureaucratic structure necessary to enable the profession to develop.
Nevertheless IPENZ will never be capable of controlling within itself all the knowledge based activities in which professional engineers engage, and therefore it actively supports technical groups.
