BioMed Central | Full text | A Taxonomic Search Engine: Federating taxonomic databases using web services
IPNI aims to be a catalogue of all names that have been applied to vascular plants.
IPNI provides a minimal classification, in that genera are assigned to families, but no higher-level classification is given.
The IPNI database was the second slowest, and occasionally took up to a minute to respond – on 20 occasions no response was obtained at all.

IPNI will be a dynamic resource, globally current, continually improving in accuracy, and allowing, indeed encouraging, direct contributions by all members of the botanical community.
IPNI will reside on the web, and its content will differ almost every time it is queried.
The structure of IPNI encourages the participation of institutions in addition to the three currently involved as well as that of members of this community at whatever level of involvement they select, so it is a true community project.

When for instance an older genus description is found, all species have to carry that older name for the genus part therefore their name changes.
The IPNI database is a collection of all descriptions known to the three cooperating institutions and they work towards standardizing the information in one format.

We do not have a database at Kew that allows you to look up the scientific name for any given common name, and there is no comprehensive database that we are aware of, but we do have a list of URLs which might help.
See the IPNI FAQ - question 8 In general, you have to beware that common names can mean different things to different people, will vary from country to country (sometimes between regions), and often will not indisputably link to a single species.
IPNI is a nomenclatural index which reports names as published and so doesn't use any taxonomic system.

The International Plant Names Index (IPNI) comprises a list of more than 1.3 million scientific names for seed plants and is the product of collaboration between Kew scientists and their counterparts at Harvard University Herbaria in the United States and the Centre for Plant Biodiversity Research in Canberra, Australia.
The IPNI will be used by biologists, conservationists, ecologists and ethnobotanists in order to check the names and bibliographic details of the plants with which they are working.
Combined with the data contributed by American and Australian botanists, the IPNI is unrivalled in size and coverage, say its backers.

This could be used as part of the data entry checking in a catalogue, or if your internet connection is slow, it might be possible to do a batch check of names which could be run off line.
We just don't know all the uses to which IPNI might be put once it is fully on line.

They are really nothing more than a guide to the original place of publication of a botanical name and give few clues to its current classification.
If you look carefully at the Stephanotis names in IPNI you may notice that, with 2 exceptions, they were all published more than 80 years ago, and nearly all are based on tropical Asian plants.
