  IPUMSI - FAQ
IPUMS is not a collection of compiled statistics; it is composed of microdata.
All variables in the IPUMS are "integrated": they are documented in English, associated with the relevant sections of the original census instructions, and the data are processed and often recoded for technical and other considerations.
The regular IPUMS variables -- the ones on the main variable availability screen -- are harmonized: the same codes and labels apply across all the samples that contain the variable.

IPUMS is an acronym for the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series.
The IPUMS projects are undertaken at the Minnesota Population Center, an interdisciplinary research center at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.
The IPUMS-USA samples draw on every surviving national census from 1850 to 2000 (with the exception of the 1890 census, which was destroyed in a fire) and from the American Community Survey of 2000-2004.

Censuses had been taken prior to the Constitution's ratification; in the early 1600s, a census was taken in Virginia, and people were counted in nearly all of the British colonies that became the United States.

Although this is one of the world’s largest public-use databases, it is modest by comparison with our new endeavor: we plan to build a database with some 650 samples drawn from 21 countries on six continents, and it will include about 550 million records requiring some 250 gigabytes in uncompressed form.
As in the case of the existing IPUMS, we will provide a wide variety of ancillary information to aid in the interpretation of the data, including full detail on sample designs and sampling errors, procedural histories of each dataset, full documentation of error correction and other post-enumeration processing, and analyses of data quality.

One of the great archival projects of the past two decades has been to make huge samples from each of the 1850— 2000 censuses machine-readable—including at least one percent of the American population enumerated in each year.
Across all years, a given census question (for example, place of birth) is in the same place in the dataset, and each possible response to the question (for example, Germany) has the same numerical code.
IPUMS also offers an option for selecting random subsamples: a mini version with 21,000 households, and a tiny version with 2,100 households.
