The iPodLinux project does not plan support for iPod shuffles due to the lack of a GCC compiler for the Shuffle's DSP57000 core, as well as the fact that the iPod Shuffle lacks a screen.
As of September 20, 2006, iPodLinux does not work on the new iPod firmware included with the second generation iPod nano and the updated fifth generation iPod.
One of the iPodLinux developers, Josh, has recently developed a new installer, dubbed "installer 2."[3] The new installer can install on any iPod except the 2G iPod nano, the updated 5th generation iPod, and the iPod Shuffle, although it has been achieved on the new iPod nanos in individual cases.

This first example is a blatant ripoff from the ipodlinux folks, I took this basic example which makes a cute sound, added the use of a usec timer in the ipod and the bit that controls the backlight.
In fact if you follow the instructions from the README file in the ipodlinux loader, copy the apple firmware, make_fw, loader.bin, etc to the dir where you want to build blink_fw.bin the Makefile will build the final firware to load to the iPod as well as echo the command (sudo dd...)
Ahh, I got the display working (you may need to tweak the contrast for your display, the code I borrowed (ipodlinux stuff) had different settings for each of the generations, mine is a g3).

Yes, we are benefitting a lot from the ipodlinux project, but I don't see how we could work together, as the two projects have such different goals.
You may have made a mistake buying the ipod video - this is not currently supported by ipodlinux and I don't know how well, if at all, ipodlinux will be able to work on those devices.
It appears that the ipodlinux people are making process on adding support for the video to ipodlinux.

Please note that the iPod Nano is not officially supported by iPodLinux, so there's no guarantee that this will work for you.
Unfortunately I'm unable to provide specific or personal help, but if you correctly follow the instructions, this guide should enable you to get iPodLinux up and running on your Nano.
Download the latest nighty kernel and podzilla builds from http://www.ipodlinux.org/builds/, and unzip these to the ipodlinux directory you created in the previous CVS step.
