IPv6 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
IPv6 does not have a link-local broadcast facility; the same effect can be achieved by multicasting to the all-hosts group with a hop count of one.
IPv6 addresses are typically composed of two logical parts: a 64-bit (sub-)network prefix, and a 64-bit host part, which is either automatically generated from the interface's MAC address or assigned sequentially.
An IPv6 network (or subnet) is a contiguous group of IPv6 addresses the size of which must be a power of two; the initial bits of addresses which are identical for all hosts in the network are called the network's prefix.

RFC 2460 (rfc2460) - Internet Protocol, Version 6 (IPv6) Specification   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
IPv6 Extension Headers In IPv6, optional internet-layer information is encoded in separate headers that may be placed between the IPv6 header and the upper- layer header in a packet.
IPv6 nodes must accept and attempt to process extension headers in any order and occurring any number of times in the same packet, except for the Hop-by-Hop Options header which is restricted to appear immediately after an IPv6 header only.
An upper-layer protocol or application that depends on IPv6 fragmentation to send packets larger than the MTU of a path should not send packets larger than 1500 octets unless it has assurance that the destination is capable of reassembling packets of that larger size.

IPv6: The New Internet Protocol   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The IPv6 standard defines a flow as a sequence of packets sent from a particular source to a particular (unicast or multicast) destination for which the source desires special handling by the intervening routers.
In essence, an IPv6 packet is encapsulated in an IPv4 datagram.
With the use of an IPv4-compatible IPv6 address for the destination node, the tunneling may be automated in the sense that the destination IPv4 address may be derived from the IPv6 address, avoiding the need to explicitly configure the mapping from an IPv6 address to an IPv4 address.

 IP Version 6 (IPv6)
IPv6 was recommended by the IPng Area Directors of the Internet Engineering Task Force at the Toronto IETF meeting on July 25, 1994 in RFC 1752, The Recommendation for the IP Next Generation Protocol.
IPv6 is a new version of IP which is designed to be an evolutionary step from IPv4.
IPv6 includes a transition mechanism which is designed to allow users to adopt and deploy IPv6 in a highly diffuse fashion and to provide direct interoperability between IPv4 and IPv6 hosts.

RFC 2373 (rfc2373) - IP Version 6 Addressing Architecture   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
IPv6 nodes may have considerable or little knowledge of the internal structure of the IPv6 address, depending on the role the node plays (for instance, host versus router).
An IPv6 packet with a destination address of loopback must never be sent outside of a single node and must never be forwarded by an IPv6 router.
IPv6 nodes that utilize this technique are assigned special IPv6 unicast addresses that carry an IPv4 address in the low- order 32-bits.

 IPv6
IPv6: the next generation IP In the early 1990's the Internet Enginnering Task force began an effort to develop a successor to the IPv4 protocol.
Thus, even though E and F can exchange IPv6 packets, the arriving IPv4 packets at E from D do not contain all of the fields that were in te original IPv6 packet send from A. An alternative to the dual stack approach, also discussed in [RFC 1993], is known as tunneling.
This IPv4 packet is then addressed to the IPv6 node on the receiving side of the tunnel (e.g., E) and sent to the first node in the tunnel (e.g., C).

IPv6 (see our IPv6 FAQ) is the upcoming replacement for IPv4 (the protocol that is used to route packets on the Internet, and that assigns computers IP addresses such as 192.0.2.25), and uses longer addresses such as 2001:db8:0:0:0:0:0:1.

IPv6 includes a number of those improvements in its base specification, allowing people to assume these features are available everywhere, anytime.

IPv6 also introduces and formalizes terminology that, in the IPv4 environment, are loosely defined, ill-defined, or undefined.
Note that although IPv6 addresses are four times the size of IPv4 addresses, the basic IPv6 header is only twice the size of an IPv4 header, thus decreasing the impact of the larger address fields.
Although IPv6 trials started in 1996 and initial rollout of IPv6 in the Internet backbone is expected in 1997, there is no scheduled — or desired — date of a flash cut from one to the other; coexistence of IPv4 and IPv6 is anticipated for many years to come.

 Microsoft IPv6 - Teredo Overview
As described in Using IPv6 and Teredo, IPv6 traffic that is tunneled with Teredo is not subject to the IPv4 packet filtering function of typical NATs.
The Teredo host-specific relay allows Teredo clients to efficiently communicate with 6to4 hosts, IPv6 hosts with a non-6to4 global prefix, or ISATAP or 6over4 hosts within organizations that use a global prefix for their addresses, provided both hosts are using a version of Windows that supports Teredo.
Teredo Server 2 processes the packet, determines that the IPv6 destination address is for a Teredo client, and then forwards the bubble packet to Teredo Client B. The restricted NAT for Teredo Client B forwards the packet because there is an existing source-specific mapping for Teredo traffic from Teredo Server 2.
