The sociology of intelligence at the level of sub-populations in nations is examined, and the independent (national IQ) and dependent (various measures of per capita income and economic growth rates) variables are defined and described.
Based on an extensive survey of national IQ tests, the results of their work challenge the previous theories of economic development and provide a new basis to evaluate the prospects of economic development throughout the world.

IQ and the Wealth of Nations proposes that modernization theories describe Western Europe and the Pacific Rim because these countries have appreciably the same or somewhat higher IQs than in the United States.
The highest average IQs are found among the Oriental countries of North East Asia (average IQ = 104), followed by the European nations (average IQ = 98), and the mainly White populations of North America and Australasia (average IQ = 98).
Further behind are the countries of South and Southwest Asia, from the Middle East through Turkey to India and Malaysia (average IQ = 87), as are the countries of South East Asia and the Pacific Islands (average IQ = 86), and Latin America and the Caribbean (IQ = 85).

Forcertain areas, such as academic achievement and job performance, an IQ score is the best-known single predictor of success, though other factors add small amounts to the predictivevalidity.

Even in the early decades of the 20th century, egalitarianism would have been laughed at, and eugenics was widely accepted by prominent people whose views spanned the entire political spectrum.
But a far more straightforward approach would be to simply look around us, and to survey the various countries of the world.

 Glayde Whitney - Book Review
The final conclusion of IQ and the Wealth of Nations is that national differences in IQ are here to stay, as is the gap between rich and poor nations.
Hitherto, theories of economic development have been based on the presumption that the gaps between rich and poor countries are only temporary, and that they are due to various environmental conditions that could be changed by aid from rich countries to poor countries, and by poor countries adopting appropriate institutions and policies.
With a cognitive capacity of IQ = 70, the populations of Africa cannot be expected to match the rates of economic growth achieved elsewhere in the world.

Taken collectively, these traits constitute the ability of a population to maintain and advance civilization - the most precious of human gifts - for without civilization, chaos reigns, "might makes right," and suffering abounds.
However, the most important legacy we can bequeath to our children is their own biological integrity: good health, high intelligence, and noble character.

Exploring the health gap between rich and poor: Researcher suggests intelligence may explain disparity among groups Jef's web files
In two recent scientific papers, researcher Linda Gottfredson proposes that rather than poverty causing ill health (and, generally, lower IQ scores) among lower social classes, intelligence disparities may underlie class differences both in wealth and health.
Gottfredson cites a 1995 finding that more than a quarter of some 2,600 patients struggled to understand when their next appointment was scheduled.
Gottfredson, however, sees abundant evidence suggesting that intelligence differences may explain the puzzling gap – which exists, she notes, across different time periods, nations, health-care systems and even diseases.

Journalists, tribal leaders, and activists brandished Borgstrom's proposal as evidence that administrators of the Indian Education and Self-Determination Act of 1974 could not be trusted, and that self-determination programs were a cover for a covertly terminationist agenda.

Among many ironies, The Economist falsely attributed this table to " IQ and the Wealth of Nations by Richard Lynn and Tatu Vanhanen (2002)." That landmark book, with its fascinating table of average IQs for 81 countries, is about nations, not states.
"The book’s thesis—that a country’s prosperity is closely related to the average IQ of its population—should have made the cover of The Economist because of its devastatingly important implications.
Look at this table headed "So Democrats really are smarter." The prestigious magazine The Economist (with which we’ve had to criticize before) picked it up from one of the hundreds of liberal blogs that gleefully circulated it earlier this month.
