IRC bot - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The original IRC bot was GM, written by IRC server operator Greg Lindahl, whose IRC nickname was Wumpus.
Thus, most IRC bots are run from computers which have long uptimes (generally running a BSD derivative or Linux) and a fast, stable Internet connection.
IRC bots are particularly well-used on IRC networks without channel registration services like ChanServ, such as EFnet and IRCnet, and on networks that may prevent your channel being registered due to certain registration requirements (minimum user count, etc.), such as Undernet or QuakeNet.

Early versions of EnergyMech (or emech as it is frequently called), earned a reputation as something of a script kiddie's bot, through it's ability to run multiple bots from a single process (thus allowing less desirable users to load up hundreds of vhosted clones from a shell account).
This is a reputation emech does not deserve, since it is really a rather good channel protection bot, and recent versions of emech have restricted this capacity (to max 4 bots).

After some recent discussions with some BF2Bot users (some of which are also coders), I have been playing around with a way to allow developers (Java) to easily extend the functionality of BF2Bot by being able to add your own parsing of the info from the server, own commands, and own responses.
