With the IRFU facing a major budget deficit of €4 million this year and as much as €7 million next year, it is easy to float the idea of reducing the professional playing pool from 120 players to 90.
The IRFU is listening attentively to the points of view being expressed by all participants in the debate on the future of professional rugby union in Connacht and will evaluate carefully its options before reaching its decision.
The IRFU has said that what it intends to do will not affect them, but anyone in his or her right mind would know that they will be affected.

The IRFU is trying to pull the wool over the eyes of all respecrable and honest rugby supporters, particularily those in the west of Ireland.
The IRFU have to make tough decisions and in the past they have made the right ones but I think the payback from Connacht rugby is only a couple of years away, when at last, again, we have at least one Connacht representative on the Irish team.
I don't have all the answers but what I am absolutely certain of is that the IRFU have not taken the necessary tough measures before arriving at their decision to disband the professional set up in Connacht.

It is understood, however, that the IRFU offer doesn't differ substantially from their previous position, and sources on both sides are not confident of a resolution before the oral hearing by An Bord Pleanála of the IRFU's planning application is complete.
If not, it is likely the process will end up in the courts, with the club seeking an injunction to prevent the demolition of their pavilion in the south west corner of the ground.
