SGI SPECIAL: Introducing the Jewel of UNIX, the 64-bit IRIX OS - OSNews.com
Being a UNIX, IRIX is fully multi-user, and while I tried all the pre-configured users on this machine (including root), I mostly used the system for the past two weeks using the "Guest" account.
For the Unix side of things, IRIX is based on BSD 4.4 (do not confuse this root of all BSDs in the '80s with today's FreeBSD 4.x), and its directory structure is definately a bit different than what you find on today's Linuxes.
IRIX is pretty much the same as it was 2 or 3 or 4 years ago.

NewsForge | My Workstation OS: Irix
For the uninitiated, Irix is the operating system developed by SGI (formerly known as Silicon Graphics) for its RISC-based Unix workstations, which are used for high-end graphics tasks by governmental organisations, film studios, and engineering firms.
When it was first released with Irix 5.3 and the Silicon Graphics Indy in 1993, however, it brought new features to the desktop, some of which are only now being copied by user interface designers.
My first exposure to Irix was in an Indy used as a graphics processor for converting vector graphics to raster for high end printing back in the days when you could not expect a PC or mac to do that kind of job.

This is incorrect on IRIX which keeps some old libraries around just for the sake of backward compatibility with very old programs.

 IRIX Info Page
IRIX is believed to originally have been a port of AT&T System III to the Motorola 68000 series CPU by UniSoft for Silicon Graphics, in early 1982.
The name IRIX is thought to be an amalgamate of the terms IRIS and UNIX (Integrated Raster Imaging uniX?), or derived from the ancient Greek term Irix meaning Falcon: a symbol of strength, excellence, and empowerment.
The name IRIX came into use in 1987 shortly after the introduction of the Professional Iris 4D/60, and the transition to MIPS CPUs, but the name IRIX was not officially promoted until the release of 4D1-4.0 (IRIX 4) with the IRIS Indigo workstation.

History of IRIX   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-11)
It seems fairly clear that the original 1.x IRIX releases were never actually given a 1.x designation (that GL2-W3.5 would have been called Release 5.0, and then would be version 1.5.0 in relation to the 4D/MIPS line, since that started with 2.0).
So IRIX 1 had to have been branched off of System III first by UniSoft since SGI was founded in late 1981, then V merged in soon after (System IV was an AT&T internal-only release, and System V was released in January 1983.
I found some pictures of a very old version of IRIX (either 3 or 4) in one, and once I find it again, I'll scan it - I think it was in a copy of Unix Magazine from the early 90's.
