Ireland's OWN: History   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
My commitment to the IRSP was borne out of my grounding in that tendency of Marxism commonly called "Council Communism," a tendency that I view as simply the continuation of revolutionary Marxism after the collapse of the Second International, incorporating innovations simply reflecting the consistent application of Marxist analysis to changing circumstances of political economy.
Likewise, the IRSP consistently stated that it believed that revolutions were not made by parties, but by classes and that the working class of Ireland would be responsible for its self-liberation, not dependent on the leadership of the IRSP at the time when it finally rose in revolution.
This ensured that the IRSP was not subject to the intense pressures existent for most socialist parties under capitalism to be co-opted into the existing system, with their trade union and parliamentary fractions constantly driving the movement as a whole towards increasingly reformist orientation.

Because the IRSP looks at the world as it is not as we would like it to be do we stand condemned by some on the far left.
The IRSP needs to develop a clear strategy for all sections of the working class including the protestant working class that transcends national boundaries and appeals to their class instinct.
The IRSP do not believe that the pace or direction of change is correct, but revolutionaries have to take account not only of the real world but the interests of the working class and also the crisis of socialist thought with the failure of 20th century communist revolution.

Paul Little from the IRSP said his party had taken "a long hard look at the (peace) process" and concluded that something else was needed other than the Good Friday Agreement signed by the province's main political parties.
He said the IRSP was opposed to that agreement which he said has limited political dialogue and acted as a "political straitjacket" on the peace process.

The IRSP joins with others from within the progressive community of Ireland in calling for refugees' affairs to be taken out of the hands of the Justice Minister and turned over to an independent body that demonstrates a genuine concern for the welfare of refugees and a respect for human rights.
The IRSP learned from Residents Against Racism about the case of Jasper Mordi, who was taken from his home in Kilkenny and deported to Nigeria, and whose life is now endangered because he had been prominent in opposition to human rights abuses in there, to provide but one example.
The IRSP are correct to point out that the power to have people deported should be in the hands of an independent body, not a right wing politician who will undoubtedly manipulate the race card in order to boost his profile and seek re-election.

The IRSP salutes the heroic political prisoners in Turkey, presently on a hunger strike which has claimed 25 lives, and joins in raising one of the central slogans of the DHKP-C: For independence against imperialism, for democracy against fascism and for socialism against exploitation!

This despite the fact that the IRSP gave a systematic rebuttal of the false allegations made by the original article by John Bridge.
IRSP comrades may slate Sinn Fein for implicitly recognising the state's right to police nationalist areas in Northern Ireland, but at their December 1998 Ard-Fheis they advocated a "community policing and justice service" to be jointly financed by the British and Irish states - a position not dissimilar to that of SF.
The constitution of the IRSP specifically calls for a Socialist Republic "based on the spirit of workers unity and internationalism." The keynote speech was part of a process to raise ideological debate amongst the comrades in the movement which, according to John Bridge, "is frighteningly low and left illusions are rampant." 6.

Although the IRSP derides the Provos for having "accepted the capitalist system" and of having a different (presumably bourgeois) class analysis to themselves, they continue to call for "maximum Republican unity".

The IRSP was founded in 1974 as the result of a breakaway from the Of?cial Sinn Féin.
The weight of these left-centrist elements was felt at the ?rst IRSP conference in 1975 in the shape of a series of radical resolutions.
Its unstable centrism — like that of the IRSP — shows that without a political, programmatic break from the centrist and reformist traditions of the Irish left and of republicanism, it is not possible to create an organisation capable of leading the masses to victory.

If he is unsurprisingly remembered as the founder of the IRSP and the INLA, he should also be commemorated as one of the main architects of the left turn taken by the then unified Republican Movement during the 1960s.
As a tactic, it is very valid for the IRSP to engage in joint actions, in a united front with other political organisations on specific issues and specific goals.
There was a problem of priorities because in effect, the IRSP tended to subordinate the development of the party to the construction of the Broad Front, and was willing to submerge its particular political outlook in a Broad Front (see for instance the experience of the Irish Front in Derry in 1977-78).

The Ta Power Document: An Essay on the History of The Irish Republican Socialist Movement
The 4th December 1974 is the date when the IRSP publicly and formally announced its formation, but it didn't spring up fully formed out of the blue; it, like everything else, had its roots in history, going back to the 1960's and the leftward direction which the Republican Movement was embarking on.
The problem for the newly formed IRSP was to get away from the Officials and to press for a cage of their own and to acquire camp council recognition.
Shortly after this five IRSP prisoners escaped from the magistrate’s court in Belfast, while another successful escape was made by nine IRSP prisoners in cage 5 in May 1976 by way of a tunnel.
