On the other hand, the IRT Standard design, of which the Lo-V's are representative, amounted to a fleet of over 2000 cars, and were always a rail fan draw, so saving them was a more immediate problem.
The Q cars' high-performance Peckham trucks, too heavy for the IRT elevated, were replaced by the trudging Composite trucks, reducing the speedsters to a cranky crawl.
As a final insult, when the Qs were transferred to the Myrtle Avenue "L" in 1958 to replace the last gate equipment, the stained glass window-vents were removed and the clerestory lowered, stealing still more from the old charm.

 NYCT A Division
The A division is the IRT lines (numbered lines) and are 1 foot narrower and 9-24 feet shorter than their B division counterparts and have only three sets of doors per side rather than four sets per side.
Except for portions “inherited” from old elevated lines, the IRT is the oldest of the three subway divisions and most of those have been demolished or heavily rehabilitated.
The rest of the IRT (as well as much of the BMT) is part of what is known as the "Dual Contracts" lines, and most of the Dual Contract lines are built to BMT specs.

The Lenox Avenue subway, branching off the Contract I Broadway main line north of 96th Street, and the elevated structure to 180th Street were also Contract I construction, intended to bring the First Subway into the Bronx.
The 3rd Avenue connection was completed before the Contract I tunnel work and as such, 3rd Avenue trains began using the el structure to Bronx Park prior to the opening of the Interborough Subway.
After the Dual Contracts extension of the line to 240th Street, the Bronx Park terminal was rendered mostly redundant and finally abandoned in 1952; the West Farms yard was torn down at this time as well due to new yard facilities at East 180th St./Unionport, and 239th Street.

IRT Third Avenue Line - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Third Avenue Line, or Third Avenue El, was an elevated railway in Manhattan and the Bronx, New York City.
The IND Sixth Avenue Line and the IND Eighth Avenue Line did indeed render the Sixth and Ninth Avenue Els obsolete.
The Second Avenue El was also gradually demolished from 1940 to 1942, leaving only the Third Avenue El, which was intended to stay in use until and the Second Avenue Subway was built to replace it.

Second Avenue El by Alexander Nobler Cohen - Page 7
Although the editorial agreed that thousands of riders would lose their transportation line and be "dispossessed," it still found the economic incentives for demolishing the el to be motivating indeed.
At the expense of the city or not, the Second Avenue el did benefit particular local communities within the city, but in fact the community that most benefited from the el was not Second Avenue.
The Third Avenue line was overcrowded -- one rider complained in a letter to the editor of the New York Times of the "disgraceful, indecent and unhealthy overcrowding" on the Third Avenue el – but it did provide transportation along a route similar to that of the Second Avenue el.

I've checked maps and seen the area from the air; there is a residential neighborhood along Lincoln, Coates, and Grundy Avenues to the southeast of ISP, so there are plenty of structures and large trees between the radar and the area covered by FIRO's analysis.
Moreover, much of this area is slightly higher than the airport; topographical maps indicate that there is a rise east of Grundy Avenue (approximately 1.3 nm SE of the center of ISP) that is 10-15 feet higher than the airport elevation.
