ISBN - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The ISBN system was created in the United Kingdom in 1966 by the booksellers and stationers W H Smith and originally called Standard Book Numbering or SBN (still used in 1974).
The International ISBN Agency [1] in its official manual [2] states that the 10-digit ISBN check digit, which is the last digit of the 10 digit ISBN, is calculated on a modulus 11 with weights 10 to 2, using X in lieu of 10 where ten would occur as a check digit.
ISBN check form checks checksum; outputs list of possible correct ISBN when the input is incorrect.

Wikipedia:ISBN - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
However, ISBNs only identify a particular edition of a book, and the reader will not see the full range of versions of the book for sale.
ISBNs are sometimes referred to as "ISBN numbers", but since the "N" in "ISBN" already expands to "number", "ISBN number" is redundant, much like "ATM machine", "HTML language", "PIN number," or "RAS syndrome".
Also, note that a registered ISBN, even one which appears with a corresponding book page on a major book distributor database such as Amazon.com, is not definite proof that such a book exists.

 EE4243 ISBN Secrets
With no alternate method of obtaining a result which is an exact multiple of 11, the ISBN is guaranteed to detect all single-digit errors and all swapped-digit errors.
Since an ISBN error will go undetected only if the sum changes by a multiple of 11,and since the difference (A-B) can never equal 11, then adjacent swapped digits will always be detected.
If an ISBN is totally garbled (or forged!), the use of modulus 11 implies that there is one chance in eleven that the (random) number will nonetheless pass the error detection test.

FAQs about the ISBN (International Standard Book Number) Revision Project   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The ISBN and bar code on books will not need to be changed until the book is reprinted as the bar code already represents the EAN13 which is identical to the new 13-digit ISBN.
ISBN should be assigned to each new format of an e-book as the need arises to identify it as a new item entering the supply chain.
ISBNs can be incorporated into other "umbrella" systems that make use of existing identifiers, in the same way that product numbering systems for bar codes incorporate the ISBN for books.

 ISBN Agency - FAQs
An ISBN should not be allocated to ephemeral material such as diaries; calendars; theatre and concert programs; advertising material or prospectuses; sheet music which is unbound and without a title page; or art prints and art folders without a title page or text.
The group of numbers at the beginning of an ISBN is the specific publisher’s prefix, which determines the block of numbers, which is the publisher’s own.
An ISBN must be allocated to whole set of volumes of a multi-volume work; also, if the individual volumes of the set are sold separately, each volume must have its own ISBN.

The first number or numbers of a 10 digit ISBN identifies the country that issued the publishers prefix; this number is followed by a dash and the publisher prefix.
The dashes (or spaces) in the ISBN occur in different places depending on the number and are meaningful, but are so frequently omitted that you can't really use the dashes for much.
There are two types of isbn barcodes, the 10-digit ISBN and the 13-digit UPC with prefix 978 or 979 (a new prefix is planned).

Get Ready for the New ISBN! - National Information Standards Organization (NISO)
The new 13-digit ISBN has been approved and plans are underway to transition to the new number industry-wide, world-wide by January 1, 2007.
However, the presence of “978” at the beginning of an ISBN will not guarantee that the ISBN was ever issued as a 10-digit number: some ISBNs with prefix 978 will be created after 2007 because publishers will continue to use the ISBNs that have been assigned to them previously until all have been used.
Whether library system databases covert the legacy ISBNs in their indexes to 13 digits or not, to provide successful searching they will have to be able to retrieve the ISBN using either its 10-digit or 13-digit format.

I'm suggesting that, if you run into books in your library that don't have ISBNs -- probably because they were published before the advent of ISBN in the early 1970s -- you can use the ISBN of a newer edition or translation or version of the book.
If you have a choice, it's better to use the ISBN for a recent version of the same book than to use a newer edition of a different translation of the same book.
The ISBNs returned by xISBN will most typically be different versions of the same work as the one identified by the input ISBN.
