ISO 12207 and Related Software Life-Cycle Standards
ISO 12207 provides a structure of processes using mutually accepted terminology, rather than dictating a particular life-cycle model or software development method.
The ISO is currently developing such guides and assessment procedures to complement 12207; the IEEE Software Engineering Standards Committee is also planning to reorganize its collection of standards to complement 12207.
The ISO standard intends for organizations to tailor these seventeen processes to fit the scope of their particular projects by deleting all inapplicable activities; and it defines 12207 compliance as the performance of those processes, activities, and tasks selected by tailoring.

 ISO.3 Conformity between V-Model and ISO 12207
The ISO 12207 standard can be applied to the acquisition, the supply, the operation and the maintenance of systems/software, independent of the fact if the development took place internally or if it was placed with an external organization.
The ISO 12207 standard does not require a development model (LC model) but delivers a software lifecycle into which, in the case of a concrete project, a specially selected development model/V-Model has to be integrated or to be mapped.
The ISO 12207 standard does not contain any regulations about methods to be applied or about products to be generated, either.

 ISO/IEC 12207 Software Lifecycle Processes - Aug 1996
According to Dr. Raghu Singh, editor of ISO/IEC 12207, this international standard on software lifecycle processes [1] was created to establish a common international framework to acquire, supply, develop, operate, and maintain software.
The activities and tasks of the development process shall be selected and mapped onto the lifecycle model." The intent and effect of the language in the international standard are to provide flexibility in ordering activities, and to choose development models to avoid the waterfall bias of other standards.
This is how ISO/IEC 12207 responds to these concerns: first, paragraph 1.5 of the standard states its intent not to describe data items when it says "this international standard is not intended to prescribe the name, format, or explicit content of the documentation to be produced." ISO/IEC 12207 has no DIDs.
