 ISO/IEC 2022 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
ISO 2022 was developed as a technique to attack both of these problems: to represent characters in multiple character sets within a single character encoding, and to represent large character sets.
To represent multiple character sets, the ISO 2022 character encodings include escape sequences which indicate the character set for characters which follow.
Although the ISO 2022 character sets are still in common use, particularly ISO-2022-JP, most modern e-mail applications are converting to use the simpler Unicode character encodings such as UTF-8.

 8. CODE EXTENSION, ISO 2022 AND 2375, ISO 4873 AND 10367
The aim of ISO 2022 is to describe the structure of a family of codetables, to provide the possibility of identification of each of these, and by applying these facilities to change tables during communication.
ISO 10367 provides a collection of G-sets, suitable to be used with level 2 or level 3 of ISO 4873.
The requirement, fixed in the structures of ISO 2022 and 4873, to reserve 64 precious positions for control characters hardly used, has strongly restricted the applicability of the standards.

Mandragor & Apinc - Free Documentation Base
For the practical use of ISO 10646, a lot of external profiling such as restriction of characters, restriction of combination of characters and addition of language information is necessary.
For ISO 2022 [ISO2022] based national standards, sufficient profiling information is provided by national standardization bodies, but, for ISO 10646, such a profiling is not yet provided.
As the profiling of ISO 10646 largely affects which character or combination of characters could be properly displayed, changes of profiling of ISO 10646 are as significant as additions of new character sets of ISO 2022.

ISO 2022 is so complex that you may be not able to understand this.
ISO 2022-compliant Character Sets, Section 4.3.2 and ISO 2022-compliant Encodings, Section 4.3.3, there are many popular encodings which cannot be classified into an international standard (i.e., not ISO 2022-compliant nor Unicode).

 Joliet Specification
The ISO 10646 character set specification may be identified by an ISO 2022 escape sequence.
References to characters in the ISO 2022 escape sequence will be given in comma-separated decimal nibble/nibble format, in hexadecimal format, and as ASCII characters, with equal signs between each format, all enclosed within parenthesis.
For instance, the 3-byte ISO 2022 escape sequence for Shift-JIS is (2/4, 2/11, 3/10 = (24)(2B)(3A)= '$+:').

The encoding is based on the particular usage of ISO 2022 announced by 4/1 (see [ISO2022] for details).
The implementor is reminded that JIS X 0208 characters take up two bytes and should not be split in the middle to break lines for displaying, etc. The JIS X 0208 standard was revised in 1990, to add two characters at the end of the table.
Although ISO 2022 specifies special additional escape sequences to indicate the use of revised character sets, it is suggested here not to make use of this special escape sequence in ISO-2022-JP text, even if the two characters added to JIS X 0208 in 1990 are used.

Luit -- locale and ISO 2022 support for Unicode terminals
While a number of localised and ISO 2022 terminal emulators do exist, none are as reliable as XTerm, and having multiple terminal emulators for multiple languages is madness.
Rather than implementing support for locale-specific encodings or (horror!) full ISO 2022 in XTerm, I have decided to write luit, a utility that can be run in any UTF-8 terminal, and will simulate locale-specific encodings as well as almost full ISO 2022 support.
An example of an application that likes to speak to the terminal by switching the ISO 2022 state using ISO 6429 escape sequences is Emacs/MULE (the extensible, customizable, self-documenting real-time display editor / incomprehensible extension).
