ISO 4217   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
ISO 4217 is an international standard describing three letter codes to define the names of currencies established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
The first two letters of the code are the two letters of ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country codes (which are similar to those used for national top-level domains on the internet) and the third is usually the initial of the currency itself.
ISO 4217 includes codes for not only currencies, but also codes for precious metals (gold, silver, palladium and platinum; normally measured in troy ounces) and certain other entities used in international finance, e.g.

With reference to the proposal by ISO CPSG to charge fees for the commercial use of ISO codes: ISO infrastructure standards such as ISO 3166 (country codes), ISO 4217 (currency codes), and ISO 639 (language codes) must be royalty-free.
Moreover, many of these ISO standards are themselves based on contributions from other sources or duplicate pre-existing data, and charging royalties for the use of this data may expose ISO itself to debates over intellectual property rights and financial liability.
The Consortium is gratified to see that the ISO currency codes are now publicly available on ISO 4217 Currency Codes, as promised in ISO reaffirms free-of-charge use of its country, currency and language codes.

About ISO 3166 Country Codes - National Information Standards Organization (NISO)
Since the publication of ISO 3166-1 in October 1997 only one change has been made to the Standard: the official name of the Independent State of Western Samoa was changed to Independent State of Samoa as of 1998-02-05.
These code elements were selected on the assumption that the area would have a name containing the component "Palestine" or "Palestinian." By the end of 1998 no UN-official name for the areas under the Palestinian Authority exists.
An ISO 3166-1 code element for the area in question will be issued if and when the UN officially includes the area in its lists of country names.

The three-character codes are constructed by taking the two-character ISO-3166 country code (known as ISO-3166-Alpha-2) and appending a single letter symbolizing the name of the currency (e.g., Mexican peso MX+P = MXP; Mexican nuevo peso MX+N = MXN).
