You should feel the stretch in the ITB muscle in the right hip and along the outside of the right thigh.
Orthopaedic surgeon - if injury does not respond to physiotherapy treatment, a cortisone injection into the ITB, or surgery to release the ITB may be indicated.

The ITB is considered a continuation of the tendinous portion of the tensor fascia lata muscle and is indirectly attached to parts of the gluteus medius, gluteus maximus, and the vastus lateralis muscles.
The ITB moves anterior to the epicondyle as the knee extends and slides posteriorly as the knee flexes, remaining tense in both positions (5).
Histopathologic studies (9) in patients who have chronic ITBS show that the tissue under the ITB consists of synovium that is a lateral extension and invagination of the knee joint capsule, rather than a separate bursa as previously described in the literature.

Common knee injuries | iliotibial band syndrome | runners knee
As you probably guessed, since the ITB runs from the hip down to the knee, the upward movement of the right hip stretches the tensor fascia lata and overall ITB at the precise time that it is trying to shorten and control adduction of the right thigh.
You are at increased risk for ITBS, compared to the runner who prefers flat surfaces, and your ITB troubles are likely to strike on the 'down' leg, the one positioned toward the outside of the road.
In one of the most popular ITB stretches, if the right leg is the afflicted leg, the left leg is crossed over in front of the right one, and the upper body is inclined to the right (a wall is usually used for support), placing a fair amount of stretch on the right iliotibial band.

ITB, or Iliotibal Band Syndrome, is something that can cause a runner long-term pain and can stop his running in its tracks.

As long as the foot is in a neutral position, the knee is aligned correctly between the hip and the foot.

eMedicine - Iliotibial Band Syndrome : Article by John M Martinez, MD   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Background: Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS) is the result of inflammation and irritation of the distal portion of the iliotibial tendon as it rubs against the lateral femoral condyle, or less commonly, the greater tuberosity.
Pathophysiology: The ITB is a dense fibrous band of tissue that originates from the anterior superior iliac spine region and extends down the lateral portion of the thigh to the knee.
Sex: ITBS has been reported in men and women equally; however, women may be more susceptible to developing the syndrome because of anatomical differences of the thigh and knee, such as genu varum and increased internal tibial rotation.
