ITRANS - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The "Indian languages TRANSliteration" (ITRANS) is an ASCII transliteration scheme for Indic scripts, particularly, but not exclusively, for Devanagari (used for the Hindi, Marathi, Sanskrit, Nepali, Sindhi and other languages).
It was in some use for the encoding of Indian etexts, it is wider in scope than the Harvard-Kyoto scheme for Devanagari transliteration, with which it coincides largely, but not entirely.

ITrans Modular technology works by using a 34” diagonal cube made from 4 ITrans tiles which can then be stacked together to make displays in a variety of sizes and shapes (vertical or horizontal).

There are several versions of ITRANS, but here I will show you only two: 5.1 (implemented in Itranslator 98) and 5.3 (implemented in Itranslator 99 y 2003).
Note that uppercase for the first letter of a sentence, proper noun, etc. is not usually used in ITRANS and Harvard-Kyoto, since that might be mistaken for a different character "originally" included in those transliteration schemes.

 iTRANS (Interactive Translation) Service
The iTRANS system stands for interactive translation and allows for a dedicated application on a cellular phone which will be used by travelers to translate simple sentences using embedded keywords.
This translation is sent back to the phone in compressed speech form and can be played back using the alert transducer (in phones which support a speaker phone, the audio is patched to the appropriate audio amplifier which plays back the speech audibly through the speaker).
This scheme is a basic translator service with a difference since the analysis of speech on the phones is difficult to achieve given the limited computer resources, it is more practical to have a translator service application housed on the server.

... convert ITRANS text / files
The disadvantage of using the 'Auto-Convert' feature is, that after every character typed in the ITRANS panel, Itranslator has to re-convert the entire text.
This is no problem as long as the text is short, but when typing long texts, this feature should be disabled.
Above 500 KB size, it is better - and faster - to use Batch Conversion.

 ITRANS Transliteration
Modern students often actually flick the tongue downwards as the sound is made so that the result sounds something like 'ri' in the word rip, though the rolling 'r' beginning is not clearly enunciated because the tongue never actually touched the roof of the mouth.
Continuing the development, the emphasis finally shifts to the lips (labial position), having begun in the throat (guttural position), moved to at the back of the mouth (palatal), then to the roof of the mouth (cerebral) and then the teeth (dental).
This used to be written k.h -.h after any consonant in ITRANS means that it is followed by a halant and 'a' is not sounded after it.
