  Country Codes
These codes are the same as the ISO 2-alpha codes in nearly all cases.
ISO 3-alpha codes are not posted to the Internet by ISO; the codes shown are from the United Nations, Country and Region Codes for Statistical Use, which also provided the numerical codes.
Vehicle codes are from the Transport Division of the UN Economic Commission for Europe; I have omitted several vehicle codes which appear to be obsolete because they refer to previous names of the territory rather than the present name.

Datamonitor - ITU urges caution on Pulver.com .tel proposal - News
ITU secretary Yoshio Utsumi last week wrote to the Internet Corp for Assigned Names and Numbers, urging caution before approving Pulver's.tel proposal, and any other domain that would use telephone numbers.
The ITU is concerned because Pulver's.tel would use normal telephone numbers, which are administered by the ITU according to a numbering plan known as E.164.
He added that the ITU has been instructed by its members, in a 2002 resolution, to "take any necessary action to ensure the sovereignty of ITU Member States with regard to country code numbering plans...

 PNG Specification: File Structure
For convenience in description and in examining PNG files, type codes are restricted to consist of uppercase and lowercase ASCII letters (A-Z and a-z, or 65-90 and 97-122 decimal).
Chunk type codes are assigned so that a decoder can determine some properties of a chunk even when it does not recognize the type code.
The significance of the case of the third letter of the chunk name is reserved for possible future expansion.

ICANN | Letter from ITU on Telephony-Related TLDs
Even if this were considered to be acceptable practice, the ITU would suggest that particularly careful reflection is warranted as to the global long-term benefits to the Internet community in allocating certain TLDs at this time—especially considering both the irreversibility of such a decision, and that it may preclude, perhaps other, more beneficial, future uses.
In this regard, the ITU is working with the IETF to progress a careful exploration of these complicated issues in the context of its joint work concerning the ENUM protocol.
The role of the TSB Director as well as that of ITU Member States with respect to the allocation and management of numbering resources is defined in Resolution 20: “Procedures for allocation and management of international numbering resources”, adopted by ITU Member States at the World Telecommunication Standardization Conference (Geneva, 1996).

 ITU/CCITT-EIA-Bell RS-232 Pin Assignment Reference
The signals selected for the RJ45 subset of RS-232 are identical to those used by IBM in the DB 9-pin, with the exception of Ring Indicator.
The ITU (formally the CCITT) elected to use numbers as designators for each electrical circuit in the RS-232 signalling system.
The EIA (an American standards body) decided to create the RS-232 standard (now in revision E or RS-232-E), and in their standard, they used letter codes to identify each circuit in the RS-232 signaling system.

Phonetic Alphabets, Historic, English & Others
The need arose after the invention of the telephone and more so of radiotelephony for means to correctly identify letters and words sent by these equipments.
Many non-English languages use accented letters and as it is mostly not easy or possible to print these on some mailers, viewers or printers, codes have been devised to indicate these accents.
Where no code is practical, the unaccented letter is used.
