Thaksin’s relationship with Shin has been a wellspring of speculation and intrigue ever since he entered office in 2001, and has played a vital role in shaping his unfavorable view of two cornerstones of Thailand’s burgeoning democracy: the constitutionally enshrined independent bodies and the media.
The opposition MP is also worried that the sale of majority stakes in Shin Sat and iTV to foreign investors could lead to problems for national security since satellite services and TV stations are considered to be vital to national interests.
Shin Corp's lawyers have maintained that the company is legally a separate entity from the prime minister and that the growth in its profits in recent years had nothing to do with the fact that its founder, Thaksin, and his party happen to control the government.
