iTrip Amplifier - Proof of Concept
Apparently griffin did not include anything to attenuate the output (at least to the transmitters technical specs[link]), therefore the iTrip is effectively limited by the size/efficiency of the antenna.
In the end we want to have the itrip circuitry out, but the case sill in decent repairable condition as a hole will be drilled for the antenna the circuitry replaced, and the case glued.
In the example circuit, the antenna, itrip, and + and - wires were connected to the amplifier using alligator clips.

ITrip - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In October 2005, shortly after the launch of the 5th Generation iPod, a version of the iTrip that uses the lower dock connector was announced, following the removal of the remote control connector from the 5th Generation.
Because they draw power from the remote control port on the iPod, the original iTrip, iTrip with LCD and iTrip mini prevent the simultaneous use of the wired remote or extra headphones.

SchwarzTech » Review: Griffin iTrip Auto
For those not familiar with the iTrip, it is an FM transmitter, allowing audio from the iPod to be broadcast to a radio (essentially creating a miniature radio station with an FCC-limited 30 feet range).
Tuning this iTrip is just like the other LCD-equipped versions, but with slightly moved controls—an +/- switch lets you select a frequency, and “select” button locks it in.
The iTrip Auto is a complete package for using your iPod in the car, but still allows you to use your favorite case.

DX mode switches the iTrip to a stronger mono signal—perfectly acceptable when you’re listening to audiobooks or podcasts or you simply need a little extra oomph in areas where there’s a lot of interference from FM radio stations.
In LX mode in the VW the iTrip was subject to the same kind of occasional static as the old iTrip and AirPlay (the PodFreq remained static-free).
In DX mode in the VW the new iTrip was solid as a rock and clearly outperformed the old iTrip and AirPlay (though it did so in mono).

You may have to perform a brief configuration process the first time you use the iTrip, but this is explained well in both the software and the instructions, and most users will only need to do it once.
Since the iTrip and iTrip mini have no screens or buttons, Griffin includes on the CD a group of 102 small audio files, each representing a possible broadcast frequency that can be used in the United States.
To set either iTrip model to use a given frequency, play the file corresponding to that frequency on your iPod and press Play/Pause when the iTrip's light begins to blink rapidly.

iTrip with LCD || The iPod Observer - Now Playing
Griffin heralds the DX mode as the choice for users in cities with crowded airwaves, as the signal is able to "punch through cleanly." In our testing the DX mode did offer a clearer signal on FM stations that had a good bit of interference, but listening to music in mono feels so 1950's.
If you plan on using the iTrip primarily in your car, Newer Technology's more affordable RoadTrip!+ (5 stars, October 2005) is a superior product, being both easier to use and capable of charging your iPod at the same time.
While this raises the appeal of the iTrip for users in crowded cities, it doesn't negate the mediocre sound quality and thus our rating remains unchanged.

UK ‘bans’ iPod radio add-on | The Register
Griffin Technologies' iTrip iPod add-on is illegal in the UK, British distributor A M Micro has said.
That said, anyone using the iTrip would also need to cough up £500 ($808) a year to the Performing Rights Society to cover royalty payments to artists whose music is broadcast.
Of course, the iTrip broadcasts at very low power - the device itself draws all the power it needs from the iPod itself - but it's still enough to intrude on a broadcaster's licensed frequency, potentially interfering with listeners who have tuned into a specific station.
