iTunes is an application programme made by Apple Computer intended to play, organise and buy music files (it is also a common name for iTunes Music Store).
Although the first release of iTunes was very similar to SoundJam MP (some features were removed such as the ability to use interface skins and broadcast audio over the Internet), Apple have added a number of significant features in subsequent versions.
iTunes stores metadata about the audio files in two files which are equal in content, though not in format.

iTunes originally had a brushed metal interface, but with the introduction of iTunes 5.0, it now has a new, thinner interface commonly referred to as "plastic", "light metal" (as opposed to the heavier "Brushed Metal"), and "dark unified" (based on the Unified look from Mac OS X v10.4, but darker).
Video support in iTunes is limited: while videos are distinguished from audio in the Library by a small icon resembling a TV or display, they are still grouped with normal music and organized by the same musical categories (such as "album" and "composer").
Some complain that the tight integration of the iTunes Music Store with iTunes makes the sold music inaccessible to users who use operating systems other than Mac OS X or Microsoft Windows such as the Linux operating system, for which no version of iTunes is available.

They obviously realise that you can't stop people moving music around like this, but the bandwidth restrictions (both in terms of clients, and by making it a live stream) mean they're willing to let this one pass.
music purchased from the itune music stire is not mp3, its an AAC format using mpeg layer 4.
On the other hand, iTunes has a single manufacturer in control of how it works (Apple), has had recent massive publicity (iTunes Music Store), and is only supposed to play, stream or buy music, not transfer files "illegally".

This option gives you the ability to shorten file names (as well as the names of artist and album folders that may be created to store your files) and to simplify the character set used for folder and file names so that the resulting files will have the greatest cross-platform compatibility.
Apple may have ways of marking files as store purchases that no one contributing to hymn-project.org has yet discovered, and any such undiscovered markers could mean, although I hope it is unlikely, that files which you once thought were completely freed from DRM suddenly become unplayable.

Boing Boing: Steve Jobs (?): Apple discards information transmitted by iTunes
Michael did some protocol analysis of the information that the MiniStore sends to Apple and discovered that every time he clicked a new song, iTunes transmits the song title and artist, as well as his personal, six-digit iTunes identifier.
This explicit disclosure is not made on the official iTunes page (there is an oblique reference to the MiniStore there, but nothing about data-collection).
He logged into his account, then quit iTunes (to make sure the update was written to the.plist file), and found a cookie with an 8-digit identifier as well, labeled as X-Dsid.

according to someone who works on itunes, re-downloading the music you bought is considered “rebroadcasting” by the music companies, and they charge apple a fee for that.
