The Omaha version of the World Heavyweight Championship was unified with the AWA World Heavyweight Championship on September 7, 1963.

In 2000 Lesnar signed with World Wrestling Entertainment (then the World Wrestling Federation) and was sent to Ohio Valley Wrestling for development, where he wrestled in a tag team named the Minnesota Stretching Crew with Benjamin (a reference to the Minnesota Wrecking Crew).
On October 8, 2005, Lesnar won the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship in a three-way match at a New Japan Pro Wrestling show in the Tokyo Dome, which included the then-champion Kazuyuki Fujita and Masahiro Chono.
On March 19, 2006, Brock Lesnar retained his championship, defeating Akebono with a DDT and not a F-5, but while the referee was down on the mat he hit the former Sumo wrestler with the IWGP belt, but he was not disqualified.

Scott Norton is an American professional wrestler who wrestles for New Japan Pro Wrestling and previously wrestled for World Championship Wrestling.
By the end of 1989, Norton went to the Pacific Northwest territory with Nord where he won the heavyweight title from Brian Adams.
On March 17, 2001 Norton defeated Kensuke Sasaki in Nagoya, Japan to capture the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship.

Inoki was originally booked to win the championship; however, he was accidentally knocked unconscious during the bout.
As a result, Hulk Hogan went on to win the first IWGP World Heavyweight Championship on June 2, 1983; and in the years since, the IWGP Championship has evolved into perhaps Japan’s most important wrestling title.

The top title in any promotion should be the Heavyweight Championship and when it is being announced, it should be referred to as the (insert fed name here) Championship.
WWE Championship, ROH Championship; the fact that the name of the promotion comes before the championship entails that it's the representative title of the promotion.
I'm cool with the Smackdown title being called the World Heavyweight Championship for the sake of distinction between that title and the WWE Championship.

As goes for the WWE cruiserweight championship the WWE does not know who they want as champion they have released their best talent and they are going to T.N.A to rub it in their faces.
I do agree they probably made a slip making him the heavyweight champion, but the fact is that they can't undo it now, and this is why I don't think he's quite so 'believable' in the cruiserweight division anymore.
Y2J WAS NWA World Middleweight champ and WCW World Crusierweight champ.

The Triple Crown match should be interesting in that Toshiaki Kawada might have the IWGP heavyweight championship of New Japan and he might unify both that title and the Triple Crown to crate a "quadruple crown" or a better name for it "grand slam" title.
As for Kawada getting the IWGP heavyweight championship, he is in a six-man tournament to fill up the vacant championship at New Japan Wrestling World 2001 show on 1/4/2001 (the traditional date for New Japan's biggest show of the year).
The participants in the IWGP World Title Tournament are: Kensuke Sasaki, Yuji Nagata, Satoshi Kojima, Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Masa Chono, and Toshiaki Kawada (All Japan).

Yeah, but when it's announced at shows it's always the World Championship, with no mention of heavyweight.
And since only one of the men to ever hold it has been a heavyweight, I think it's fair to say it's not a heavyweight belt.
If ROH were to do a new belt, I'd say base it on the new IWGP title that Lesnar has right now.
