  BMW World - iDrive Technology
Instead of a bewildering array of switches, knobs and buttons, the BMW iDrive cockpit is divided into two separate sections: the driving zone, containing all controls essential to driving, and the comfort zone, where a central console serves to easily and smoothly regulate all the vehicle's comfort functions.
E65/6 7 Series was the first to use iDrive.
E60 5 Series and E63 6 Series models were the first to use second-generation iDrive, with a simplified 4-position menu.

To use iDrive, the driver (or passenger) manipulates a large silver knob (the "controller") located atop the center console in order to navigate and select functions displayed on a screen in the center of the instrument panel.
Key to the functionality is tactile feedback, which is said to allow people to gather information through the sense of touch, while simultaneously allowing them to focus on other tasks–like keeping their eyes on the road.
Upgraded iDrive software can be downloaded at the dealership in the form of enhancements to existing functions or the addition of new ones, each of which has its own tactile sensations.

MotoringFile » Archive » 2007 Navigation System to Include iDrive-like Controller
In an attempt to convince luxury car buyers that they are getting the latest and greatest electronic gizmos for their 77K, some knucklehead at BMW crammed all of the car’s electronic controls together and gave them all one switch.
The intention of iDrive was to combine — and therefore simplify — all the controls, including climate, entertainment, navigation, car information and other systems.
The iDrive uses a centrally located, spinning, mouse-like knob to change settings, and a centrally located computer screen in the center of the dashboard to help you navigate through iDrive’s various menus.

 2004 BMW 5 Series, BMW X3 & iDrive Review - ROAD & TRAVEL Magazine
But for those who lack either the patience or the wit to figure it out iDrive is a maddeningly complicated and unnecessarily layered process for anyone seeking to merely turn up the bloody heat or switch radio stations.
One doesn’t need to touch the iDrive knob to for the simplest levels of temperature control or to get sound from the radio, but if like to adjust the qualities of that sound then you must take the plunge.
The howl raised by those resistant to the charms of iDrive (and their name is legion) apparently led BMW to modify the system somewhat for the 5 series adding an escape hatch (push the Menu button) when lost in the maze with no way out.

Finer adjustments, like those to the vehicle's graphic equalizer, are felt as more of a "tick-tick-tick." The result – after a bit of practice – is the ability to understand where the functions are without losing eye contact with the road.
The iDrive system also helps the driver by incorporating more important features where the eyes are likely to focus.
For example, while the navigation system displays a relatively detailed, full-color map on the dashboard, simple "on-deck" directions are displayed in the space behind the tachometer as a directional arrow and large numerals show distance to the next turn.

This article on BMW's iDrive is over a year old, but it gives a good summary of the history of this device.
When designing an in-car interface, there are roughly two ways to go about it: stick with what people know, possibly losing functionality in the process, or give the user something new to learn, possibly losing users in the process.
The iDrive is supposed to be great - if you spend the half hour to study it and the two weeks to get used to it.

If you're really a techno-phobe having all of these functions as separate buttons owuld be even more overwhelming because it would be harder to spearate the basic controls from the advanced controls.
Also, the idrive interface is really just like the current nav system except that the knob has been moved to the center, the interface has been cleaned up, and there are more functions.
Not that this matters, but my father who is complete technical idiot is capable of using his 7 series nav system and even commented that he finds it much easier than using a regular computer- and he likes it better than having lots of separate buttons.

The iDrive is incredibly easy to use if you give yourself 5 minutes to try it out.
However, this has only been the case of the 2003-2004 7 series where it was quite confusing; however it has since been fixed.
The iDrive can also come with voice activation which works with any voice (you do not need to program your own words into the system...) and this helps the driver go to a specific place or navigation, or even change the cd instead of having to go through iDrive.
