Salon.com Technology | Will Americans go for mLife?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Imode users (over 32 million at last count) can buy tickets, find the nearest Starbucks, download and swap pictures, set up group get-togethers and do far too many other things to list here.
KPN's imode, for example, requires a special handset made by NEC or, later this year, Toshiba.
It's going to start with imode, but the whole idea of the Japanese is that if 3G is a global standard, they're going to jump on that and make those handsets for the rest of the world.

Delivering the World Wide Web on Wireless: iMode
Although iMode is not just a protocol, but a complete infrastructure, it is important to remember that NTT DoCoMo can decide what conditions it must be used under and whether other network operators or content providers should pay to use it.
iMode will work on either type of network, but because it is on the packet-switched type in Japan, users have an "always-on" connection, meaning that they are perpetually connected to the Internet as long as they are in an area of suitable coverage.
Potential iMode content writers and application developers outside of Japan may resist using a service or protocol that can be changed at any time at the whim of NTT DoCoMo.

12.7 How does iMode work?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
iMode is however slightly different from WAP in that it uses cHTML as a markup language, and uses more traditional internet protocols to deliver it.
One major difference is that this iMode center is under the control of the developers of iMode, NTT DoCoMo.
The iMode center performs protocol conversions which enable the content to be delivered to the phone.

Delivering the World Wide Web on Wireless: Comparison of WAP and iMode
Comparing WAP and iMode, for the moment, is something that only Japanese users have the luxury of doing in reality, as their country is the only place with both services available.
The 4 million WAP and 14 million iMode users there are in a perfect position to see both the strengths and weaknesses of the competing technologies.
WAP and iMode's approach to marking up content is fundamentally different, in that WML is a new language based on a newcomer to the WWW scene, XML, while cHTML is simply an extended subset of the existing Web standard, HTML.

Both iMode and WAP are complex systems, and it is really only possible to compare present implementations of iMode and WAP, as well as their business models, the pricing, marketing etc. There are several important differences in the way iMode and WAP based services are presently implemented, marketed and priced.
Another difference is, that at present in Japan iMode is implemented with a packet switched system, which is in principle "always on" while WAP systems in Europe are at present circuit-switched, i.e.
Another difference is, that at present an iMode user is charged for the amount of information downloaded plus various premium service charges (if used), while WAP services are at present charge by the connection time.

I-Mode VS. WAP > Phone Battle Brewing Between iMode And WAP > August 11, 2000
VoiceStream Wireless Corp. (stock: VSTR), Bellevue, Wash., is logically an ideal partner for DoCoMo, because it has yet to move into the WAP arena, said Adam S. Zawel, senior wireless analyst at the Yankee Group, Boston.
There is a positive a negative side to iMode's nature because it is not entirely open.
WAP is not advanced enough to compete with iMode because it is a harder language and can access fewer websites, said analyst Toal Hart, wireless services at the Gartner Group.

The unofficial independent imode FAQ - 6. imode versus WAP
imode sites can also be inspected with ordinary internet web browsers (although the result differs somewhat from the display of the same pages on imode handsets).
WAP implementations in Europe presently (Nov 2000) are circuit switched (users need to dial-up in order to connect), imode is packet-switched (always connected, as long as the user's handset is reached by the imode radio signal).
So if an imode user looks at a news item or at a football result for 2 seconds or 3 hours on his/her mobile handset, the charge is the same whether it's 2 seconds or 3 hours, as long as he/she does not download additional information.

 WAP NG and iMode 2
Where iMode is defined solely by one company, on the basis of HTML - which the W3C, its specifier, has stopped supporting - WML, the markup language in WAP, is an application of XML, the rule system for specifying markup languages defined by the W3C (HTML is based on SGML).
In iMode, this translation would be restricted to wireless adaption of TCP and HTTP, and stripping out pages which exceeded the size limit.
The convergence of the WAP and iMode environments will result in an environment which is easier to manage for content providers, using one single markup language.

IMODE has won 1,840,443 subscribers in only 9 months to the paid-for service, and users are growing at the rate of 13,000-18,000 per day.
The iMODE server and microbrowser also uses proprietary technology, belying the carrier's commi8tment to open standards, which brought it into the GSM camp on 3G.
The data services of iMODE use DoCoMo's packet data network, and users are charged by amount of information, 0.3 yen per 128 bytes, rather than by time on line.

So looking at an imode page with an ordinary PC based browser will give you an idea, but will not exactly reproduce what imode users see on their handsets.

iMode is faster, and also provides access to the whole Internet, as well as specially designed iMode sites that feature color graphics; overall, it is a compelling rather than a frustrating experience for users.
And since WAP is an open standard (whilst iMode is proprietary to DoCoMo), it is likely to develop faster.

Book review - "The iMode Wireless Ecosystem"
The mobile internet service iMode, as is well known, was a run-away success in Japan, gaining 33 million subscribers in under three years, but flopped overseas.
In The iMode Wireless Ecosystem, Takeshi Natsuno, one of the three creators of iMode as a spin-off of Japan's telecom giant, NTT, provides an interesting analysis of why iMode, and the mobile internet in general, gained such widespread adoption in Japan, but has been much more slowly adopted in the US and Europe.
The key to iMode's success, he argues, is explained by the ecosystem metaphor.

A little creation called "iMode", launched by Enoki and his team of internet consultants in 1999, which was developed following a call by NTT's CEO to capitalize on the ubiquity of cell phone use in Japan.
Unlike other wireless internet providers, iMode is able to provide content along four dimensions: news, transaction services (including mobile banking and securities trading), database information (including directories and white pages), and entertainment (including cartoons and personalized games).
Mr.Enoki apparently captivated the G8 summit leaders last year as well when they were presented with individual iMode handsets preprogrammed with their nation's flag as the screen display and their nation's anthem as the phone ring.

Whether you know it as iMode, mMode, or merely as the industry-standard browser for wireless devices, there's a reason why this technology holds the potential to vastly increase the reach and grasp of rich Web payload and deliver it to a population in pursuit of ultimate mobility.
Since introducing the browser in 1999, DoCoMo, the arm of Japan's NTT that developed iMode, has attracted an impressive and fast growing number of devotees around the world.
Even so, given the wide acceptance of the iMode platform as the industry standard, and the lure of customer traffic anytime anywhere, another 50,000 sites have sprung up.

Microsoft excluded from DoCoMo's ecosystem | The Register
DoCoMo is trying to build on its network of partnerships for iMode, which include KPN of the Netherlands, Telefónica of Spain and Bouygues of France, to create such a bargaining machine.
A broader alliance between the iMode partners, going beyond simple licensing of the content platform, could achieve economies of scale in handset purchasing by acting as a consortium as well as establishing an international brand to rival Vodafone Live!.
If DoCoMo aims to build an international alliance around iMode, the most logical step, as we have pointed out before, would be to take the driving seat in the Starmap Alliance, which needs to attract more heavyweights, and is already in talks with Cingular.

MobileTechNews - NTTPC Displays VPN Network Using iMode Phone
Using an iMode phone to connect with a corporate network over the Internet presents something of a system security risk, as iMode handsets do not have the ability to encrypt data built into them.
The iMode VPN Solution basically solves this problem by removing the risk and thus maintaining the security of business networks, even when employees need to use portable phones to connect to them.
Because the Internet is cut out of the equation, there is no chance of outsiders being able to intercept important corporate data, or of hackers being able to break in and change or destroy data stored in a company's computer system.
