Iaijutsu - L5r: Legend of the Five Rings - a Wikia wiki
Iaijutsu is a martial art that trains the motions associated with drawing a katana from its sheath, striking an opponent, removing blood from the blade, and then re-sheathing the katana with smooth, controlled movement.
Iaijutsu is the standard technique for duels within Rokugan and a signature trait of trained duelists, such as the Kenshinzen.
In iaijutsu, the sword begins sheathed and the emphasis is on the initial strikes, while in kenjutsu, the sword begins unsheathed, and the emphasis is on both attack and defense.

Kashiwa Dojo - London & Ramsgate
Iaijutsu, the art of drawing and cutting with the blade, was seen as an art in it's own right and was practiced in parallel with Kenjutsu.
Iaijutsu (today's Iaido) was developed for encounters in daily life where the sword would be drawn and used against one or more adversaries, the aim being to dispatch the opponent with the first (or at most second) strike.
There were many schools of Iaijutsu and as such there were a variety of techniques, methods of striking, parrying and even re-sheathing the blade (some schools even made students take an oath to never pass on what they had learned so as to keep the techniques secret and therefore more effective in a fight).

The epic iaijutsu master makes one attack as a full round action when she spirit strikes; a successful Spot check (opposed by the iaijutsu master's Iaijutsu Focus skill check) allows an observer to notice a faint blur about the target as the strike connects.
The iaijutsu master can follow a spirit strike with an echo from the edge, but unless she uses up another of her spirit strike uses for the day, this second strike is visible (but still shockingly fast).

Agreeing on a Iaijutsu duel is to put your character's life (and all that he signifies) at stake in a ruleset that disconsider most of his abilities.
Kenjutsu, then, is the de facto fighting style in Rokugan and iaijutsu becomes the style of a handful of bushi who troll the courts for duels, easily snuffing their non-Crane/Dragon enemies by denying them the use of their abilities because of an inexplicable cultural rule.
That said, you are highly unlikely to encounter iaijutsu duels outside of court because it is a formalized thing that requires permission from one's lord to put his life on the line.

Which is essentially what an iaijutsu duel is. The assumption was that if you killed somebody before they could react with iaijutsu, then they should have been better prepared for the attack, not that you are some sort of dirty cheater.

 E-Budo.com - Kenjutsu vs Iaijutsu
It appears that, over time, we have made a mess out of taking bits and pieces of ryu and focusing on them to the exclusion of the other component parts that would make one "complete." That's fine, I guess, since we are not career samurai of the feudal ages.
It just seems odd that someone who practices only iaijutsu without learning what to do after that initial draw and cut, and another who practices kenjutsu without knowing how to initiate his combat from an undrawn sword, would each consider their arts to be a complete knowledge of how to do battle with a sword.
So to answer the original question again, "kenjutsu" is commonly used to refer to a koryu whose main study is sparring and "iaijutsu" is commonly used to refer to a koryu whose main study is solo kata *but* there's a lot of overlap.

By using the Tamiya Ryu Iaijutsu Michigan Dojo as an example, I hope to show that the Seven Principles of Bushido (The Way of the Warrior) can, in fact, be utilized quite effectively as an ethical guideline, especially in the context of teaching and practicing a government-protected cultural art like Tamiya Ryu Iaijutsu.

If the prospective student feels that the responsibility to Tamiya Ryu Iaijutsu to live his life by this set of precepts is too overwhelming or difficult, then all he has to do is say so, and we will understand and encourage him to look elsewhere.
