Topic: Iain Colquhoun

  Colquhoun Clan, History
Although the name Colquhoun derives from the barony of Colquhoun in Dumbartonshire, which was granted in 1241, the lands surrounding Loch Lomond became part of the Clan estates through the late fourteenth century marriage of Sir Robin Colquhoun to the Fair Maid of Luss, a Celtic heiress to the lands of Luss.
When Iain Colquhoun was requested by King James I to retrieve the apparently impregnable Dumbarton Castle from the Crown's enemies, he responded "Se je puis", hence the clan's motto.
The Colquhouns never fully recovered from the magnitude of the military defeat, and their lands passed, through a marriage of a Colquhoun heiress to a Grant chief in 1718, to the Clan Grant.

 Rossdhu House
After that, the Colquhoun and Luss kindreds and followers merged to form the Clan Colquhoun, whose tartan was to be seen in various parts of the house at Rossdhu, and also at the Colquhoun Arms inn on the main road nearby.
The Colquhoun of Luss coat-of-arms is obviously connected with the Cross saltire of the Earls of Lennox.
Sir Iain's sword with its damaged guard, his club with five little death-nicks in its handle, and his revolver with one round fired and the rest jammed splayed with the lead of the German bullet, are all almost unbelievably still to be seen (at one time) at Rossdhu.
