Professor Iain Wright, from the ANU Faculty of Arts, has uncovered a potential source of inspiration for the famous scene.
Professor Wright estimates that Macbeth was written and first performed in 1606, soon after Scottish monarch James I assumed the throne of England.
Professor Wright argues that although Shakespeare kept his distance from the emerging masque hype, the bard acknowledged the trend by incorporating references into his later works, and tailoring his plays for performances in the closed, exclusive space favoured by the king.

It's not exactly fighting in the streets but this cross sniping in the local press is less than impressive and must leave people wondering if, beyond the rhetoric, anyone is actually doing anything to reduce the yobbish behaviour on our streets.
The final evidence which probably swings the vote in Mr Wright's favour is the Council's decision to close the public path into Aldeburgh Close because of anti-social behaviour in the area.
Perhaps Mr Wright's real complaint is against Hartlepool's habit of addressing issues by setting up endless teams and committees which in the end achieve very little except an unusually high consumption of coffee.

There will people on the streets before this hospital is allowed to close and Iain Wright needs to decide which side he is on; the people who use the hospital or the people who want to close it.

Iain Wright may not make it to the Cabinet but his earnest localism undoubtedly impressed constituents.
Even so, the Labour Party saw its share of the vote plummet from a formidable 59.1 per cent when Peter Mandelson was re-elected three years ago to a bare 40.7 per cent on Thursday - Labour's lowest share of the vote in Hartlepool for at least half a century.
