BUCHAREST - Scores of tonnes of crude oil which spilled from a flood-damaged pipe in southeastern Romania yesterday were threatening to pollute the river Danube despite efforts to control the spill, a government minister said.
The Ialomita flows into the Danube river some 180 km (110 miles) west of the Black Sea, on Romanian territory.
Lificiu said several floating dams made of bags filled with highly absorbent materials had already been installed on the Ialomita and that environment experts were closely monitoring the spill's advance.
