Iambe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Greek mythology, Iambe was a goddess of rhyme and merriment.
Iambe made Demeter laugh by creating an elaborate ritualized exhibition of herself.
Iambe exposed herself completely and Demeter could not help but be amused by her brazen display.

In Greek stories, Iambe was a wild goddess of sacred sexuality, (related to Baubo), who used poetry and witty comebacks to cheer the goddess Demeter up.
Iambe is credited with creating the iambic pentameter verse (a metered verse with two distinct accents - playwright William Shakespeare's work is a classic example of iambic verse).

Iambe, referred to in the Hymn to Demeter (Homeric Hymn 2, lines 202-205) as "thoughtful Iambe", is a maid in the household.
By her jokes and laughter, Iambe managed to lift the goddess's sorrow, and she caused Demeter to laugh.
Iambe is also associated with, or sometimes another name for, Baubo, who also made Demeter laugh with her sacred guesture of ana-suromai: lifting the skirt to reveal the vulva.

 CAMWS 2003: Art L. Spisak
I argue that he, as part of the iambic tradition (see J.K. Newman, 1990), on the model of Iambe’s ritualized jests (aischrologia) in the Hymn to Demeter, used obscenity to target an overly strict and inhibiting mentality that was a threat to the health of the community.
There the risqué jests of Iambe remedied a condition that had responded to none of the normal means of treatment: she used these jests to lighten Demeter’s severe and intractable mentality or mood – to break through her grief over the loss of her daughter.
Rather, the earthy humor of her jests was meant to jolt and liberate Demeter from her antisocial, unproductive, and dangerous state of mind (see M. Arthur 1994).

Over the past three years, IAMBE has slowly been evolving as an organisation and the Chicago World Congress was the first with significant activities organised by IAMBE.
As far as future meetings are concerned, although it is not possible for IAMBE to meet annually, the general consensus was that the IAMBE's governing council should try to meet every year.
Even though IAMBE got off to a slow start, the organisation now seems to be established and everyone looks forward to the leadership to be provided by the new officers, the new governing council, and the new membership committee.

The brisk, lively little creature fell down powerless when ever it tried to stand, and when she took it up to nurse it comfortably in her lap, it whined pitifully, and looked up at her sorrowfully, and as if complaining to her.
It would take neither food nor drink; its cool little nose was hot; and when she left the cave, Iambe lay panting on the fine woollen coverlet which Paulus had spread upon the bed, unable even to look after her.
Before taking the dog the water she had fetched in the graceful jar-- which was another gift from her hospitable friend--she went up to Paulus and greeted him kindly.

Estelle is the only person who can fully communicate with it; though Iambe understands most languages perfectly, very few have ever been around the two long enough to pick up the robot’s semantics.

In his 'Greek Myths', Robert Graves writes that Demeter (in disguise) was the guest of King Celeus in Eleusis.
Vol 1, p.92) Graves writes, "Iambe and Baubo personify the obscene songs, in iambic metre, which were sung to relieve emotional tension at the Eleusinian Mysteries; but Iambe, Demeter, and Baubo form the familiar triad of maiden, nymph, and crone.
Old nurses in Greek myth nearly always stand for the goddess as crone." (p.96)

As the procession proceeded on route to Eleusis the participants would, at a certain place, shout obscenities.
This was a re-enactment of an old mythical woman called "Iambe" who was said to have made Demeter smile, at a time when she was full of sorrow for the loss of her daughter Persephone.
Also during the procession their would be shouts of Iakch' o Iakche, which was related to an equivocal deity, referring to "Iacchus" who was identified with Dionysus, but in some versions said to be the son of Persephone or Demeter.
