 REVIEW
Above all, Astbury shows that not only has he kept up with some of the more significant developments in certain variants of popular music over the last decade but, more importantly, he's able to craft his own distinctive and relevant contribution that doesn't sound out of place alongside many of today's younger acts.
Astbury reports being inspired both by the emotive resonance of some of the songs from the rock opera and by its treatment of the notion of martyrdom, one of his own long-held lyrical preoccupations.
While Astbury's "electronic landscapes" are fresh and compelling, with their driving beats and layers of sound, and while his voice is as effortlessly commanding and evocative as ever, on occasion you can hear the lyrics just a little too clearly.

Ian Astbury's (so far) only solo effort, 2000's "Spirit\Light Sound", was the singer's attempt at living up to his declaration that "Rock is dead".
To begin with, it's clear that Astbury and produer Chris Goss were not the best pair-- neither seemed to really have a good grasp for assembling an electronica piece, and samples come floating in and out seemingly at random (check the irritating processed noise on "Tyger" for a good example of this).
In the end, Astbury's partnership with Billy Duffy and the tension the two generated is the real strength of the Cult-- I'd love to see the pair attempt an album in the electronica vein, but this one is pretty much dead on arrival.

Spirit/Light/Speed is probably indistinguishable from what a Cult album would've sounded like circa 2000: rough and earthy, full of the mystic lyrics and extroverted performances that Astbury's been doing since early in the Cult's career.
Though this is a solo album only a fan could really love, Astbury's transcendent voice -- one of the best of any British band during the '80s -- makes highlights out of a few songs here, including the ballad "Tonight (Illuminated)." ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
