Ian was awarded the New Zealand Institute of Architects' Gold Medal, their highest honour, in 2004.
Ian is widely admired for his thoughtful, innovative, often provocative but always accomplished work, which includes Civic Square and Wellington Library, Jade Stadium in Christchurch, Victoria University's Student Union Building, a number of waterfront refurbishments such as Shed 22 and Odlins, and public spaces such as Taranaki Wharf.
Ian was also involved in the concept design of the rapid transport system in Bangkok.

The civic centre project brief was for a new library, conversion of existing library into the City Gallery, extension and refurbishment of City Council buildings, earthquake strengthening and refurbishment of the Old Town Hall, car parking space, design of the new public space and imperative to the development was a link to the developing waterfront.
Ian Athfield was to take the dominant role in the civic centre project and was directly responsible for the new library, a new children’s museum and the square itself.

Designed by Athfield Architects, the building is truly unusual and different from an ordinary exhibition gallery.
The art gallery located on the Kelburn campus of Victoria University in Wellington is built on the space remaining between three university buildings of different ages: the Old Kirk Building, the Hunter Building and the Student Union Building.
The gallery was completed in September of 1999 to mark the Queen Victoria centennial; it measures 330 square metres and houses a great variety of continually changing collections.

 Wellington Marine Conservation Trust
A collaboration between Ian Athfield of Athfield Architects, Keith Wilson of Sedgwick Group Architects and Megan Wraight of Wraight and Associates Landscape Architects, resulted in a building that will imitate the journey offered by the centre to visitors.
