Fortunately, Ian Carr is as in control of his material as Davis.
Carr is both an accomplished jazz trumpeter and writer and is able to unpick the music without coming on like some muso-anorak.
Ian Carr's MILES DAVIS is the most in-depth assessment of Miles since his death in 1991, and a studied treatment of his later years has been long overdue.

Amazon.de: Miles Davis: The Definitive Biography: English Books: Ian Carr   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
In the 17 years since Carr's biography of the mercurial trumpet genius was published, Miles has died and lots of new material has surfaced (including Davis's hilariously profane autobiography).
Carr also assumes you have a basic grasp of the history of jazz and popular music of the 20th century, not bothering to explain background such as the recording bans of the 40's.
Carr does a good job of contrasting this image with the more common one of Miles as the shaman who has foreseen his own demise and is bidding farewell (which Jack Chambers depicts in the new introduction to MILESTONES).

Ian Carr and Nucleus: '70s British Jazz Rock Progenitors
Carr was in serious financial straits; Karl Jenkins and John Marshall had departed to join Mike Ratledge and Hugh Hopper in Soft Machine; Chris Spedding chose to pursue a career in rock; and Jeff Clyne had moved on to a successful career as a studio musician and member of Gilgamesh and Isotope.
Whereas Carr had always considered the original band to be a collective, when faced with others' lack of commitment, it became clear that this was, indeed, Carr's group.
Carr would record his sadly-overlooked Old Heartland in '88 with a string orchestra and, on some tracks, a somewhat-reconvened Nucleus that included Marshall and Castle, but the music bore no resemblance to the jazz/rock fusion that he had pioneered during the '70s.

Miles Davis: The Definitive Biography - Ian Carr - Used Books
British jazz musician, broadcaster, and writer Ian Carr's superb biography of the mercurial trumpeter follows Davis's ever-evolving career, vividly depicting his New York apprenticeship with Parker (the model for his restless musical experimentation), as well as his growing musical confidence and early-'50s struggle with heroin addiction.
Carr's expert musical analysis encompasses Davis's mid-'50s period of brilliant creativity, with a band that featured saxophonist John Coltrane and drummer Philly Joe Jones, and his later cycles of discovery of new ways of musical expression, including his late-'60s and early-'70s flirtation with rock.
In a counterpoint to Davis' autobiography, Carr provides a balanced portrait of one of the undisputed cultural icons of the 20th century.

Nowadays, Ian Carr, however, is as busy as ever and has recently been engaged as musical consultant for the Mike Dibb television documentary on Keith Jarrett.

This search for an identity within jazz that stands apart from the hegemonic American styles was something that occupied trumpeter, composer and educator Ian Carr since the Sixties.

The Unofficial Ian Carr + Nucleus - Alyn Shipton Interview
I've had no problems in getting to grips with Ian's background, because my grandmother grew up near to where Ian and Mike were children, and our respective great grandfathers were both part of the Durham establishment in the 19th century.
So in considering the musical language of Ian, I've viewed it in terms of a particularly British dialect of jazz, albeit one that draws from Ian's extensive knowledge of and love for American jazz, but not forgetting his world music connections with the likes of Amancio D'Silva and Guy Warren.
Jazz was briefly hailed as the new thing, and everything from Sunday supplements to teenage magazines were full of Jamie, but now the footmen have turned back to mice, the glass slipper has gone missing, and we're on to the next fashion of the moment....

 [karma-laboratory] Ian-Carr Harris
Okay, well I seem to understand what Carr-Harris' goal was but I found that this survey exhibition of his work from 1989 to 1999 was very 'un-eventful' and unimpressive for an artist producing work for the past few decades.
Perhaps it's because I don't care to put the effort and time into understanding his complexities -- just as our tour guide seemed to suggest about the art critics who have decided against even writing anything about Carr-Harris' works.
At least it makes me feel good that I'm not alone in my feelings and that the befuddlement that is Ian Carr-Harris has caused the current issue of Lola Magazine to feature an entire article about this 'generation art gap'.
