7.30 Report - 14/3/2001: Australias vice-chancellors call on politicians to commit to education
Professor Ian Chubb, vice-chancellor of the Australian National University, and chair of the Australian Vice-Chancellors Committee, told the National Press Club that our universities are falling behind the rest of the world, that, unless we move now to address the drift, we may never be able to catch up.
PROFESSOR IAN CHUBB: I think the standards are as best we can judge, and we use possibly indirect indicators like where our graduates go, with whom they're employed, where in the world they go, what graduate schools around the world they go, and so on.
PROFESSOR IAN CHUBB: That's pretty close to where we are.

Flinders University: News, events and notices - Budget not an educational panacea   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
Professor Ian Chubb said that while any initiatives for schools and research are to be applauded, and in particular the Government's excellent response to the Wills Report, the Prime Minister's claims that the budget will secure Australia's education future and the development of our intellectual capital, are "sadly overstated".
Professor Chubb pointed to two major omissions that "separate the reality from the rhetoric": first, the continued decline in the level of the Government's investment in universities, and second, the narrowness of the budget's new funding for research.
Professor Chubb said the most glaring inadequacy in the budget is the failure to provide sensible indexation that would flow to salaries - rewarding adequately the people whose work could indeed lead to the development of our intellectual capital.

catallaxy » What is a university?
In the SMH ANU VC Ian Chubb was rather too honest for his own good about why he doesn’t like the idea of liberalising the rules:
Ian Chubb said that if renowned overseas universities came in and “creamed off” students from highly popular and cheap-to-teach courses such as law, then local universities would be left struggling with the financial burden of running the worthy, but costly to teach, courses.
Well actually that is the role of law schools (and law students) in Australian universities, but only someone like Chubb (or perhaps the Dean of Arts) could think this is how it should be.
