  Ian Davenport
Davenport was born in Sidcup in Kent, and studied art at the Northwich College of Art and Design in Cheshire before going to Goldsmiths College from where he graduated in 1988.
Davenport's first solo show was in 1990, and in 1991 he was nominated for the Turner Prize.
Davenport's use of dripped paint and gravity has been compared to similar techniques employed by Helen Frankenthaler and Morris Louis[?] in the 1950s and 1960s.

When abstract artist Ian Davenport agreed to create a huge painting at the gateway to London's Bankside, he had no idea what he was letting himself in for.
But Turner Prize-nominated Mr Davenport liked the idea of the mural being on Southwark Street, used by more than 1m people a year, many of whom may never set foot in an art gallery.
When Mr Davenport finally decided to use fluid enamel on steel panels, fired at 825 °C, he and his wife had to head to a remote factory in Germany, 50 miles from Dresden, to find somewhere with furnaces big enough to take the panels.

It is 15 years since Davenport took part in the legendary exhibition 'Freeze' at Surrey Docks, one of the now fabled generation of British artists to emerge at that time.
Davenport was commissioned by Southwark Council and Land Securities to create a 50m long, 2.9m high wall as the centrepiece for the Southwark Street Bridge regeneration project - called 'Poured Lines' it is created using fluid enamel on metal panels fired at very high temperatures.
Work by Ian Davenport can currently be seen at the Hayward Gallery in London within the exhibition 'How to Improve the World, 60 Years of British Art, Arts Council Collection'.
