Ian Gillan was one of the foremost vocalists of the heavy metal style of rock that emerged in the 1970s, earning his greatest renown as a member of Deep Purple, though he also led bands named after himself.
Another member of the latter band was bass player Roger Glover, and the two were invited to join Deep Purple in 1969, debuting with the band at the Speakeasy club in London on July 10.
Gillan's next solo album, Naked Thunder, was briefly in the British charts in July 1990.

Ray Fenwick: News: In Japan with the Ian Gillan Band
Ian Gillan recollected in his autobiography "The gig at Yubin Chokin Hall went brilliantly and brought back memories of the visit I made with Deep Purple, which simply did not compare." This is the gig that is captured on the Angel Air release, "Live Yukin Chokin Hall, Hiroshima 1977".
Ian Gillan became dissatisfied with the final mixes of the album and this delayed its eventual release in April 1977.
The Ian Gillan Band were on the road for much of May 1977 promoting the album (their Rainbow gig on the tour has already surfaced on Angel Air).

Ian Gillan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ian Gillan (born on 19 August 1945; Hounslow, London), is an English rock music vocalist known as the lead singer for legendary rock band Deep Purple, and for his year-long stint in Black Sabbath.
Gillan was born at Chiswick Maternity Hospital, Hounslow, London, England in a family of Scottish descent (his father was from the Govan area of Glasgow).
The early band sound had a distinct jazz-rock aspect which proved unpopular and was replaced by a more high powered hard rock sound as Gillan reformed the lineup and shortened the group's name to Gillan.

 Ian Gillan Band History
A spur for Ian to throw himself back into full-time recording and touring was provided by an emotional appearance at Roger Glover's 'Butterfly Ball' live show at the Albert Hall on October 16th 1975, his first stage appearance in over two years.
Ian gathered together a recording band consisting of Mike Moran, John Gustafson (who'd been working with Roxy Music - Eddie Jobson was also asked to join but got a better offer from Frank Zappa), and Ray Fenwick (from Fancy), who had all originally played on the Butterfly Ball project, and ex-Elf percussionist Mark Nauseef.
When Ian next played the UK, in August 1978, he was to do so with a band which played hard rock with at least as much aggression and imagination as any other contemporary act.

Ian Gillan and his band of rag-tag cohorts are masters at so many different styles, yet they manage to gel them all together so that the band sounds like they have direction, rather than running in twenty different directions.
Gillan's last disc is perhaps his heaviest and certainly one of his most complex and compelling.
Gillan is a legend and his voice is one of the most recognizable in rock history, but somehow I just prefer him singing over the heavier music, or even the blues and funk based songs of his early career.

The IAN GILLAN BAND was a rock-fusion oddity that at its best was no less than genius and at its worse adrift on a sea of jazz with no port in sight.

Amazon.ca: Scarabus: Music: Ian Band Gillan   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
The road between Ian Gillan's first two stints fronting Deep Purple is not only a musically rewarding one but also a textbook example of the dark side of fame.
After trying to establish a new sound miles away from Purple's proto-stomp with the tricky jazz-rock fusion of his first two solo albums, Gillan was under increasing pressure to conform to his old hard-rock persona both financially and critically (i.e., the albums didn't sell and the press ignored them besides).
Alas, this one went unheard by most and Gillan was to throw in the towel, hire the big fat bald guy and the skinny-tie guitar wanker and revert to the old cannon-fire approach his 15 minutes of fame had shackled him to.

 Ian Gillan Band - Reviews
This is an important album historically and musically as it captures Ian during his jazz phase, an era often sadly overlooked by many...This was a tight band, playing very intricate music, with some great bass/guitar interplay.
Gillan is in fine voice on the jazz-fusion of "Moneylender", Purple's "Child In Time" is haunting and soulful - especially given the venue - and there's plenty of funk and boogie...
So these 2 live-CDs of GILLAN are a must for dedicated fans, but don’t expect a big sound, because what you get is really the performance as it was back then, and not some sort of overproduced record.
