 Books | Breaking the mould
Shelley freaks and Byron fanciers are often the same breed, and it used to be common gossip among them that Ian Gilmour had been working for about a hundred years on a life of the two poets, and had not yet got to 1816, when the poets first met.
And Gilmour finds it "surprising" that Shelley should have gone to Ireland in 1812, though by his own account there was no-where else where the hideous effects of the British administration and anti-Catholic discrimination were more in evidence.
Gilmour is a sprightly 76, and with a bit of luck, he sees this volume as the first in, say, a trilogy in which the wonderful works of these two wonderful men are explained in terms of their relationship with one another.

Amazon.fr : The Making of the Poets: Byron and Shelley in Their Time: Livres en anglais: Ian Gilmour   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
While Byron and Shelley's friendship was the high point, not only of their brief lives, but also of late British romanticism, Gilmour's engagingly written tandem biography explores their early years, before they met, and the political atmosphere of the French Revolutionary era in which they grew up.
Gilmour, a former editor of the Spectator and a Conservative MP, has previously written mostly on politics and economics, but this work on the two poets has a shrewd eye for both their mythmaking and posthumous reputations.
As Gilmour smartly shows, however, there is a vast gap between an impecunious half-Scots baron and the grandson of a rich baronet, as well as the nuances of Byron's flamboyant experiences at Harrow and Cambridge, compared with Shelley's miseries at Eton and Oxford.
