During Hislop's tenure Private Eye was sued for libel by corrupt publishing magnate Robert Maxwell.

Ian Hislop first submitted to Private Eye in 1980 when he satirised the Room of My Own feature in the Mirror newspapers colour supplement with a funny article on how an IRA prisoner on the dirty protest has decorated his cell in a fetching brown.
Although Ian was only an occasional writer for Private Eye he was surprised to be made deputy editor while Richard Ingrams, one of the creators of Private Eye was on holiday.
As any new editor would do, Ian made changes to the magazine increasing the amount of serious coverage of local government and created the feature Doing the Rounds which focused on hospitals and the health service.Yet it was through Private Eye that Ian made many enemies.

Mr Hislop is remarkably short and apart from that looks exactly like he does on the TV, except more hassled, and miserable and rushed.
