Ian R. Hodder (born 23 November 1948 in Bristol) is a British archaeologist and pioneer of postprocessualist theory in archaeology.
Hodder's fieldwork most famously involves excavating of the 9,000 year-old Neolithic site of Çatalhöyük in the central Anatolia (modern Turkey): he is Director of the Çatalhöyük Archaeological Project which aims to conserve the site, put it into context, and present it to the public.
He has endeavoured to explore the effects of non-positivistic approaches on method in archaeology which includes providing each excavator with the opportunity to record his or her own individual interpretation of the site.

In this latest collection of articles, Ian Hodder sets out to deal with new developments in archaeological theory and its application to archaeological data.
Yet Hodder's brief is wider than mere commentary:he aims to break down the separation of theory and practice and to reconcile the division between the intellectual and the ``dirt'' archaeologist.
Through a series of examples--from excavation and heritage issues to site reports--the book demonstrates that an interpretive archaeology must be applied to archaeological data in order to contribute to modern social practice.

The initial excavation was interrupted in 1965, and answers to the riddles of this Neolithic site remained unresolved until Ian Hodder initiated a new campaign of research in the 1990s.
Hodder and his colleagues have established that this great site, dating back some 9,000 years, provides the key to understanding the most important change in human existence—the time when people moved into villages and towns, adopted farming as a way of life, and began to accept domination of one social group by another.
Through meticulous excavation procedures and laboratory analyses, they peel back the layers of history to reveal how people lived and died and how they engaged with one another, with their environment, and with the spirit world.

This is a completely revised edition of Ian Hodder's controversial textbook first published in 1986.
It has been challenged in recent years by a 'post-processual' archaeology which draws upon the wider perspectives of history and social anthropology, insisting that account must be taken of the context and meaning of behaviour, and that the ideological uses of archaeology be recognised by practitioners.
Ian Hodder, a leading figure in the new movement, argues that in explaining the behaviour of past societies a concern with meaning must be joined to the study of ecological constraints and economic and social processes.
