  Biography
Ian Hudghton was first elected to the European Parliament as the Member for North East Scotland following a spectacular by-election victory in November 1998.
Ian, from Forfar, was first elected as a member of Angus District Council in 1986, serving for eight years as Housing Convener.
Ian was re-elected to the European Parliament in June 1999 and now sits as one of the two SNP Members for Scotland, along with the country’s other six MEPs.

A victor in the North East of Scotland European by-election last November caused by the death of Dr Allan Macartney, the MEP is a former leader of Arbroath-based Angus Council.
Mr Hudghton, 47, became a councillor on Angus District Council via a by-election in 1986 and from 1994 to 1996 he was also deputy SNP leader and property convener of Tayside Regional Council.
Mr Hudghton is married with two teenage children and still lives in Forfar where he was born.

At the Scottish National Party Annual Conference in Aviemore at the weekend, Ian Hudghton MEP scored a resounding victory in the election of a successor to Dr. Winnie Ewing - a former MEP - as President of the Party.
Ian’s success rate as an Election Agent continued with the victories of John Swinney, who took the North Tayside seat at Westminster, and of Allan Macartney, who trounced the Labour incumbent in the Euro elections in North East Scotland.
Ian has been re-elected twice to the European Parliament, and is currently President of the European Free Alliance group of MEPs and a Vice-President of the 42 strong Greens/European Free Alliance Group.

Ian Hudghton, an MEP and a member of the parliament’s committee on budgets, said: "The impact of a coordinated response is far greater than the impact of individual member states.
Neglected diseases are a particular challenge in developing countries, where individuals have poor access to health care and education and face practical constraints such as an inability to refrigerate their medications, said Mr Hudghton.
Mr Hudghton conceded that the proposal lacks detail about how the partnership will be put into action, despite the known challenges of public-private enterprises.

Ian Hudghton was first elected to the European Parliament in 1998, as the North East SNP’s unanimous choice candidate in the 1998 by-election following the death of Dr Allan Macartney.
In the 1999 European elections Ian headed the SNP list, and at the SNP Annual Conference 2003, delegates voted overwhelmingly in his favour to once again head the Party’s list of candidates for the 2004 Euro-elections in which the SNP held its 2 seats.

An appeal for European Union compensation for Scottish fishermen hit by quota cuts was blocked by the Foreign Office, according to a Scottish National Party MEP.

IAN Hudghton, the SNP Euro MP who pressed the European Commission to compensate fish farmers at the height of the ISA (Infectious Salmon Anaemia) outbreak for the slaughter of their salmon, has now called on the Commission to approve a new vaccine to combat ISA and to contribute funding for its distribution.
