Ian R. MacLeod - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ian R. MacLeod (born 1956) was born in Solihull, United Kingdom.
He is the author of the novels The Light Ages and The House of Storms, which are set in an alternate universe nineteenth century England, where aether, a substance that can be controlled by the mind, has ossified English society into guilds and has retarded technological progress.
MacLeod's first novel, The Great Wheel, was published in 1997, and won the Locus Award for the Year’s Best First novel.

Although Macleod is not a recognised 3-point shooter, if he receives the ball in the wing spot he will often sink the jumper or either throw a head fake and drive to the basket.
This season Macleod has been used as an out and out post player, which is not his strength.
Macleod has bags of potential and has the ability to make a game his own.

Ian R MacLeod: Voyages by Starlight - an infinity plus review
In MacLeod's hands, the lyrical intimacy of domestic Horror familiar from Bradbury, while deployed with a certain humane obliqueness, is devastating in unusual measure.
Drawing upon MacLeod's particular command of the ambience of the Second World War, "Tirkiluk" turns a strange Arctic menage into an embodiment of all the betrayal and self-sacrifice family life might ever entail.
MacLeod provides a variety of answers, none entirely comforting; but the four SF pieces here share a sense that it is nostalgia for the bright natural past that will be most corrupting in the utopias and dystopias to come.

Ian MacLeod pictures and comments - Scotch Whisky - bottler
Ian MacLeod has important stocks of single malt, coming from most of the Scottish distilleries, obviously Glengoyne (owned by Ian MacLeod itself), Lagavulin, Scapa, Tobermory, Arran, Isle of Jura, Talisker, Mortlach and many others.
Ian MacLeod also sells a famous vatted malt marketed by the company as "The Six Isles", made from single malts coming form all the whisky producing islands of Scotland (Arran, Mull, Skye, Orkney, Jura and Islay).
The advantage of Ian Macleod is that they own lots of excellent casks and about 10% of those casks (out with Glengoyne) are sold as independent single malts, in the collections Chieftain’s, Dun Bheagan and Macleod’s Malts.

Macleod’s work was the The Light Ages; the 2004 Nebula Nominess for Best novel made me an instant fan, and the story continues in a release earlier this year, The House of Storms.
Macleod garnered the World Fantasy Award for Best Novella, with Summer Isle (also nominated for the Hugo), a novella that this year we will see in its full length novel version, released by AIO Publishing.

Review: Ian MacLeod's The Light Ages, reviewed by Colin Harvey
MacLeod cleverly never nails the events clearly to a year in our calendar -- although each age is a hundred years, sometimes the ages last over a century -- but there is a real 1960s feel to this section, though it's the 1960s of the Paris riots.
Anna is there, as is George, an upper class Guildsman who is as in love with her as Robert is. Even the rich know that change is in the air, but it isn't the peaceful sea-change that Robert hopes for, but instead bloody confrontation made all the more shocking by the beauty of the setting.
The Third Age of Aether ends in revolution; from the finely-wrought descriptions of the death of a unicorn, to the fiery destruction of a mountain of spent Aether, MacLeod is relentless in showing both the best and worst of humanity, and the legacy the revolution leaves.

 Ian MacLeod
History: Ian is the illegitimate child of Maggie MacLeod of the respected pureblood clan MacLeod, and Marcus MacAlister, the head of the Department of Mysteries at the Ministry of Magic.
Ian has never met his father and wants more than anything to have a father that will love him and be proud of him.
Before having children of his own, Ian's Uncle Scott was much like a father to him in many ways; having opened his own healing practice in Glenfinnan, Scott MacLeod is one reason Ian became interested in the profession.

 Ian MacLeod, The Light Ages
MacLeod's England is in its Third Industrial Age, some two hundred odd years after the discovery of aether, and while in many ways vastly different from the Victorian England we know -- aether-driven numberbeads track accounting records, whisperbeads remember spells for their wearer -- in some ways it is achingly familiar.
Into this world, in the small Yorkshire aether mining town of Bracebridge, is born MacLeod's protagonist, Robert "Robbie" Borrows, son to a worker in the Third Lower Chapter of the Lesser Toolmakers' Guild.
The sprawling novel chronicles most of Robert's life, from his "testing day" at age eight (a ritual where all children are aether-tested to ensure they're human and not changeling) to his later life as a Greatgrandmaster of the Third Age, and the social changes he is both witness to and participant in.

 Ian MacLeod, House of Storms
It worked beautifully as a stand alone novel, but for reasons unfathomable to me, MacLeod has produced a second novel of his alternate England, set approximately 100 years later, in the new Age of Light ushered in at the first novel’s close.
MacLeod’s sudden jumps in time and location make it impossible to identify with or care for any of the characters or get any feel for narrative continuity.
In the midst of this mess MacLeod has dropped social commentary -- about the dangers of capitalism and unfettered war, the divisions between social classes and the impropriety of keeping servants and slavery -- messages that get lost in the uneven narrative.

MacLeod's worlds have that rare and wonderful quality of being spacious enough to contain everything--joy and despair, children and skyscrapers and power breakfasts, small jokes and great empires, wooden ships and surgical lasers alike.
MacLeod's best work is characterized by high contrast, a mixture of horror and enchantment, of fierce anger and great beauty.

It is not believed that their redundancy notices made any mention of the fact that the savings so generated would help pay for the promotion bonus accorded the man whose incompetence as chief executive had been threatening their workplace, and who had just now fired them.
In MacLeod's tale, which is not very precisely dated, that fossilzation has taken centuries to mature; and what appears to be a nineteenth century steampunk venue is in fact at least a century later.
It is harder to return to Robert Borrows, because he is truly something of a sadsack; and it may be that MacLeod wished to convey something of his essentially secondary role in the events he describes through his choice of surname.

Ian R. MacLeod is most definitely a talented writer capable of making his words dance across the written page, but I have to admit I found The Light Ages a slow, sometimes frustrating read.
As this is MacLeod's first novel, though, I personally cannot help but wonder if he tried too hard to reach a lofty pinnacle of success.
Since MacLeod's main emphasis in this novel, at least as it appeared to me, was a careful and close critique of man and society, Robert's transformation would seem to have offered the author a perfect means of pursuing his loftier goals for the story.

The House Of Storms by Ian R. Macleod
Macleod has a very poetic style that at times is breathtaking to read but at other times gets in the way of the narrative.
There were parts, particularly some of the early and very late scenes, that really held together extremely well and flowed brilliantly.
Here's hoping Ian Macleod tightens his narrative next time and produces something akin to Mieville's follow-up, 'The Scar' - a novel which can retain its individuality and great writing, but remain in constant touch with the reader's emotions and excitement.
