British progressive-rock pioneers King Crimson were riding high in 1969 when founding members Ian McDonald and Michael Giles departed midtour.
McDonald plays everything from lead guitar to flute, while Giles culls insistent, imaginative rhythms from his drums, and guest musician Steve Winwood solos on organ.
This flight is ours, and the musicians' as well, for with their lone album McDonald and Giles achieve a rare feat, making music both restless in form and emotionally at peace.

Many great pop musicians, however talented, are fairly one-dimensional in terms of their abilities and aptitudes.
There is no question that he is a masterful musician, arranger, and producer, but he seems perhaps too impatient and restless to devote enough effort to the often time-consuming process of writing and revision, preferring instead to quickly capture the original idea on tape and start adding instruments and overdubs as soon as possible.
Prince's high level of musicianship, while familiar to his core followers and many fellow musicians, is far from obvious to the general pop audience.

 Fripp/Crimson Press Conference
McDonald and Giles admitted that their leaving the band was foolish and premature.
FRIPP: Yes, and you'll notice that there's a small witicism as Ian McDonald is playing the break on mellotron, the guitarist (me) is playing the same break.
So either have to accept that you are continually upsetting what a good professional musician knows what they can do or you work with musician of a sufficient committment that they are trying and perhaps succeeding in going beyond what they know they can do.

Ian McDonald and Mike Giles retired to the recording studio to record a more relaxed album, `McDonald, Giles', which quite honestly was not a commercial or critical success.
So for nearly two decades Ian McDonald roamed the musical world turning up on scores of albums as a session musician, or finding new bands who he felt needed a hand and whilst giving them the benefit of his knowledge would also produce their albums.

But as much recognizable as he is, Ian's never the same, he's always pulling some aural rabbit out of his flute, and his latest endeavor is playing with a symphony orchestra, not his usual band.
We play at the same level as any instrument in the orchestra, but everybody in the orchestra and other musicians are individually amplified in the PA system, so the audience hear it at a comfortable volume - not too loud, not too quiet - but on-stage it's very quiet.
I mean I enjoy having my hearing after all these years while so many musicians I know from the world of rock music can't hear anymore because they've damaged their hearing after years and years of playing too loudly on-stage.

Michael Giles - Biography - AOL Music
Giles, Giles & Fripp never caught on commercially and, indeed, their album was for many years one of the poorest selling in the whole Deram catalog, but they went through some personnel changes, added Ian McDonald and, for a time, folksinger Julie Dyble, losing Peter Giles along the way, and evolved into King Crimson.
Over the next few years, he worked as a session musician, playing with Terry Reid in his performance at the Isle of Wight (a performance for which he was pressed into service at the last possible moment), Steve Winwood, Zoot Money, Kevin Ayers, Yvonne Elliman, Francis Monkman, Rupert Hine, John G. Perry et al.
Meanwhile, progressive rock fans latched onto the playing of Carl Palmer and Bill Bruford, working within the context of ELP and Yes and the slightly later edition King Crimson, respectively, and elevated them to the status of art-rock gods at the drum kit.

Foreigner | Guitar Tabs, Music and Riffs
Foreigner is a unique blend of British and American musicians that made its mark in the history of classic rock with the very first album.
It all happened in year 1977 when rock’n roll music was becoming less of an attraction because of the invasion of punk rock that saw the music industry reeling into doldrums without any major hits.
The group Foreigner was formed just about 3 decades back when versatile and experienced British musicians Mick Jones and Ian McDonald got together with four relative newcomers to the arena of big rock, British musician Dennis Elliott, and Americans Ed Gagliardi, Lou Gramm and Alan Greenwood.
