Dallas - Music - Ian McLagan and the Bump Band
MS finally took Lane's life, but McLagan fondly recalls his mate's talents as a songwriter on Spiritual Boy (whose release coincides with a Lane documentary, The Passing Show).
Lane's best-known song to Stateside listeners, "Itchycoo Park," is here stripped of the pop punch and psychedelic trappings of the hit version to reveal it as a sweet pastoral pot dream, but otherwise McLagan remains fairly true to the original ambiance of Lane's compositions.
Capped by Mac's touching song for Lane, "Hello, Old Friend," Spiritual Boy is a lovely and comfy salute to one of rock's sadly unsung master songwriters and a must-have disc for anyone whose '60s and '70s soundtrack was rocked and rolled by the Small Faces and Faces.

Ian McLagan & the Bump Band: Rise & Shine - PopMatters Music Review
After all, this is a man whose career stretches back nearly to the beginning of the Beatles and whose ivory-tickling and organ-stroking graces records by the Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Westerberg, John Hiatt, and Taj Mahal.
Despite the similarity of their names and the carryover of three members from one group to the next, Small Faces and Faces bore little if any resemblance to each other, the personality of each stemming from little Steve Marriott at first to big Ron Wood and equally altitudinous Rod Stewart at second.
This remark might lead the casual observer to devalue the contributions of McLagan, drummer Kenney Jones, and bassist Ronnie Lane, but in reality, the opposite should be the case.

Austin City Limits Festival Preview: Ian McLagan and The Bump Band
Another nice side effect of my preview-writing is the inevitable music education that I get when I write about acts like Ian McLagan and the Bump Band.
Music writing these days is peppered with references to the Small Faces and other influential bands of their era, and I think that to be any kind of self-respecting music geek, I need to keep educating myself about the groups that shaped the music I'm listening to today.
Since Rod Stewart's solo career eclipsed that of the Faces and the band came to an end, McLagan has also embarked on a solo career of his own, and has released a number of well-received albums.
